When I was growing up as a kid in 1970s, I was a very enthusiastic cricket statistician. By going through various resources, I had painstakingly collected details about all the test matches that were ever played till then. Maintaining those records is no longer necessary for cricket lovers now that we are in the era of internet and comprehensive cricket related statistics are available online.

“naseeb dar pe ter aazmaane aaya hoon” is a song from film ‘Deedar”(1951), which I found again just now. And to find a link with HD restored video clip made me doubly happy. The print is looking as good as new. This song is like one of those cherished childhood friends whom we remember every now and then. With fond memories of fighting, playing and generally enjoying the innocence of those times. What i miss most about that era is the general sense of freedom. Free to live and breath, to think, to say and hear and to form opinions and impressions. Also to like and dislike giving no thought to personal gain and loss.

These days people fight elections to come to power and once they get a taste for it, then want to cling to it at any cost. During mythological times, the King of gods, viz Lord Indra would cling to his chair like a leech. One did not have to fight elections to come to power those days. One needed to do tapasya (penance) in a jungle for long years. Whenever a tapaswi sage would decide to go to a jungle and do “tapasya”, Lord Indra would get worried, thinking that the sage was after his chair. So he would try to disrupt the “tapasya”.

Sandhya Mukherjee is one of the relatively lesser known playback singers of 50s as far as Hindi film industy is concerned. But she has gone on to become one of the top most playback singers of Bengali films. I first came to know about her as a playback singer when I bought a 78 RPM record (No. N. 36794) of the film ‘Sazaa’ (1951) for the iconic song ‘tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye’. The other side of the gramophone record had “aa gupchup gupchup pyaar karen” sung by Sandhya Mukherjee and Hemant Kumar. When I first listened to this song, I felt that I got a bonus song along with the iconic song of the film.

This is the story of a 16 year old boy born in Peshawar in a conservative Pathan family for whom the association with film industry was a strict taboo. The boy was attracted to Bombay (Mumbai) as a destination. While listening to some Hindi film songs in one of the shops in Peshawar, a few of his friends coaxed him to try his luck as an actor in Hindi film industry since he had a good face. The fascination for Bombay coupled with the remarks from his friends were sufficient motivational factors for this youngboy to leave ( rather run away from) Peshawar for Bombay some time in 1935. The young boy was Ghulam Mustafa Durrani (1919-1988), later known in the Hindi film industry as G M Durrani, the playback singer.

A title like “Badi Bahu” (1951)suggests that the movie must be all about self sacrificing lead female character, and that may not send people like me to eagerly look forward to watch the movie. Not by a long shot !
