Since time immemorial, classical and semi-classical ( thumri, dadra, khayal etc,) music have been the privilege mainly of the higher strata of the society. As such, they have not been as popular as the film music as the latter has a wider reach. Then we have the legacy and a rich heritage of regional folk music which remained within the confines of the respective regions. However, with the advent of talkies and playback singing from early 1930s, film songs based on the classical ragas, semi-classical and folk tunes have played a major role in popularising these genres of Indian music especially during the golden era of the film music. In a way, films have become the catalyst for providing equal opportunity to all across India to access music.
