In my last post on the Blog, I had written about Mohana Cabral, the dancer who had ruled Hindi film industry during 1949-55. After writing this post, I thought that I should do, more or less, a similar exercise on another well- known dancer who was one of the much sought-after dancers during 1955-60, now almost forgotten. She had worked in the films of big banners like R.K. Films, Navketan Films Guru Dutt Films, Filmistan etc. The dancer is Sheila Vaz. And what a coincidence! Both Mohana and Sheila Vaz had Goan background. When Mohana ‘vacated her seat’ from Hindi films in 1955, Sheila Vaz stepped in to fill the vacant seat in 1955.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 76
———————————————————————————–

This date 10 years ago (11 september 2010) was rather unremarkable, in contrast to the same day in 1893, or 2011, when rather more important events had taken place. On 11 september 1893, Swami Vivekanand delivered an iconic and eloquent speech at the Chicago Convention of Parliament of Religions. Introducing Hinduism to the world, Swami Vivekanand spoke about intolerance, religion and the need to end all forms of fanaticism. on 11 september 2001, One of the biggest terrorist attacks took place at New York.

Today’s song is from the film Hill Station-1957.

The peak of the Golden Era of HFM was in the decade of the 50’s. In this decade, probably all operating MDs gave their best songs and the ordinary, common music loving film goer did not know how much good music he could digest. For some, it was almost an indigestion with excessive indulgence in good, Divine music and this condition had no medicine. The music lovers had to endure and enjoy the excess provision of his choicest music.

Mohammed Rafi: The incomparable (II) – Song No. 17
————————————————————————–
20/08/2020 – Death anniversary of Avinash Vyas
———————————————————————————–

The names of both Avinash Vyas and Bharat Vyas remind everyone of mythological movies and their bhajans and religious songs. On this death anniversary, I found a song, a Rafi solo with a difference. It is nothing like a bhajan or a mythological situation song, but appears to be roadside tamasha category song.

This is a fun song from the film Aadhi roti (1957). This movie has actors like Prem Adeeb, Master Bhagwan, Sulochana Latkar, Daisy Irani and Manorama. The songs are composed by Avinash Vyas and written by (unrelated) Bharat Vyas. As per the Rafi excel sheet, this song is performed on screen by Master Bhagwan. It figures as it does sound like a Bhagwan Dada song.

Now a days we are regularly discussing songs under the “Blog Ten Year Challenge”. Every day, at least one movie is found to be eligible for this challenge.

Today (19 august 2020) is an exception. No movie is eligible today for the reason that no posts appeared on this day 10 year ago. That way, 2010 had lots of DOT days – 61 to be exact. 19 august 2010 was the 45th DOT day (out of 61) of 2010.

By contrast, 2020 thankfully has had no DOT days. And I hope that we will be able to maintain this record for 2020.

Today’s song is a special song from the film Mirza Sahibaan-1957. It is special because it is almost a 9 minute song – 8 minutes and 36 seconds, to be exact. There is one more-Punjabi- song in this film, which is about 6m 30s long. Today’s song is written by Verma Malik and the music is composed by Sardul Kwatra- one of the 3 Sikh composers in Hindi films during that period ( the other two were G S Kohli and S Mohinder). His younger brother Bhagwant Kwatra was his assistant here.

Sardul Singh Kwatra was one of the very few Sikh Music Directors Hindi Films had. He was born in Lahore in 1928. He was educated and trained in classical music at Lahore. His teacher in music was Sardar Awatar Singh, who was quite famous in Lahore. Later Sardul singh joined Hansraj Behl as his assistant.

Hindi songs in Bangla Films – 33
————————————–

Music Directors, Ravi (Ravi Shankar Sharma) and Hemant Kumar (Hemant Mukherjee or Hemant Mukhopadhyay as he is known in Bangla films industry) had an interesting and collaborative partnership in the 1950s. As revealed in his multiple TV interviews, Ravi came to Mumbai in 1950 to become a playback singer. He started as a chorus singer and his first song as a chorus singer was for zara jhoom le jawaani ka zamaana in ‘Naujawaan’ (1951).
