Sometimes the temptation to write an article about an artist is to start with a sampler of the fabulous, memorable songs by him/her, to represent the variety, the flavor and the endearing memories that artist has created as a legacy and a treasure presented for generations to enjoy. But when one is writing about an artist of the stature of Rafi, or Lata, or Naushad, giving even an extended sampler for such artists is like lighting a lamp in bright sunlight (literally ‘suraj ko diya dikhana’). There are a few artists of such eminence that need no introductions through a sampler list of their songs. A name that definitely belongs to this category is Majrooh Sb.

Remembering Majrooh Sultanpuri on the anniversary of his passing away today (24th May).

“Pehli Raat” (1959) was a Pushpa Pictures Production. It was produced by A A Nadiadwala and directed by P L Santoshi. “Navrang” (1959) was one of the the first Hindi colour movies, following the lead of movies like “Aan” (1951), “Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” (1955), “Mother India” (1957) etc. “Navrang” (1959) was produced and directed by V Shantaram under his banner of Rajkamal. It had Mahipal, Sandhya, Nirmal Kumar, K. Date, Vandana, Agha, Baburao Pendharkar, Ullhas, Chandrakant Desai, Vatsala Deshmukh etc in it.

Three Hindi films of the 50s which had created lots of hype during their pre-released days were ‘Aan’ (1952), ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje’ (1955) and ‘Navrang’ (1959). They were all made in Technicolor. With nearly all the films made during that time and earlier in black and white, there was curiosity among film buffs to watch these Technicolor films. While none of these films had good story lines, they all ran in the theaters for a long time. I remember ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje’ (1955) had completed 100 weeks of run in Metro theater and ‘Navrang’ (1959) ran for over 50 weeks in Liberty theater of Mumbai.
