“Kaho Naa…Pyar Hai” was a movie that released around 14 years ago on January 14th, 2000. It was a movie by, of and for a star son. By a star son means Rakesh Roshan (his father Roshan Lal Nagrath was a star among Bollywood music directors.) of and for a star son means Hrithik Roshan (a star son) who was launched by Rakesh Roshan through this movie. And the music for this movie was by another Roshan – Rajesh Roshan. So we can safely say that this was a triple Roshan treat. The movie also gave a new lease of life to Lucky Ali (son of Mehmood). The screenplay of this movie is credited to Honey Irani and Ravi kapoor who if I am not mistaken is from the other Kapoor khandaan that Arunkumarji spoke about some time last year. (Am I right sir?).

I was introduced to English pop songs sometime in 1988-89 by none other than my son. He would play those pop songs recorded on a couple of audio tapes and I would be compelled to listen to them. Soon I started liking many of those pop songs. By 1991, T V channels like MTV had started telecasting the videos of some of those pop songs. Watching the pop songs with videos was a new experience for me. Even after two decades, I still recall a few of those pop songs which I used to like – Stevie Wonder’s ‘I just called to say I love you’, Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat it’, George Michael’s ‘ Last Christmas’, Eric Clapton’s ‘Tears in heaven’, Paul McCartney’s ‘Hope of deliverance’ etc.

So now we are into the festival season in India. Post 15th August, the month of Sharavan in the Hindu calendar, we get one festival after the other. This year Raksha Bandhan is the first. In Maharashtra the Kolis celebrate it as Nariyal Poornima. They normally set out for fishing after this festival and offer Pooja to the Sea gods. There is normally no fishing during the rainy season along the coast of Maharashtra.

When I was a pre teen and even teenager, I did not like old songs at all. In fact, I and my peers found old songs as sources of inadvertent amusement when we were tired of disliking them. We wondered all the time why old singers could not sing like the present day singers.
