Goodness, more than 5 months since the last post in this series. Starting in April, it was keeping a slow but regular pace till July, and then. . .
Anyways, back to one of my favorite genres – songs with a wonderful melody and a foot tapping beat that simply makes them irresistible hummers. One listens, and the mind simply wants to continue humming them, over and over again. There are many such songs, and practically all of them are popular and well known. The thing that I am trying with this series is to locate the unfamiliar and less heard gems of this category, which have remained anonymous, mostly for the reason that they are from films that either did not get released, or films that remained obscure and unheard of themselves.

“Gehra Raaz” (1971) was directed by Niranjan for Salim Productions, Bombay. This B grade suspense movie had Sujit Kumar, Sofia (new find as they said those days), Sheikh Mukhtaar, Abhi Bhattacharya, Satyajit, Brahnchaari, Madhumati, Mohan Sherry, Eshwar, Dinani, Paro, Uma Dutt, Hiralal, Pardesi, Rani, samson, Jelani, Lohani, Sadhna Khote, Sarla, Master Salim etc in it.

“Toofaan” (1969) was a Sargam Chitra Production. It was produced by S J Rajdeo and directed by Radhakant. The movie had Dara Singh, Anita, N.A.Ansari, Helen, Madhumati, Bipin Gupta, Azad, Sabeena, Johnny Whisky, Rajan Kapoor, Jeevankala, Ratnamala, Aravind Pandya, Uma Dutt, Dilip Dutt, Shree Bhagwan, Uma Khosla, Raja, Chandrakant, Master Dillu, Baby Shamshad etc it it.

This song is from the film ‘Raaz’, the year is 1967. It is a duet by Mohammed Rafi and Krishna Kalle. It is picturized on the hero Rajesh Khanna and heroine Babita. The composer is the duo Kalyanji Anandji and lyricist is Akhtar Romani. There are two unknown or should I say less known persons connected with this song. The female playback singer and the lyricist. I would have identified Krishna Kalle with the song “meri hasraton ki duniyaa” which is a duet with Rafi from the film “Gaal gulaabi nain sharaabi”, but that was before I heard this duet song from ‘Raaz’. This must be the high point and defining moment in her career where she is getting to sing a song for an ‘A’ grade MD, heroine and Film. This film has a very well known song which is posted here.

“Dr Z” (1959) is as obscure a movie as any movie can ever be. This movie was a Baliwala Films presentation and it was directed by Jal. The cast of this movie had such B grade superstars as Mahipal, Nirupa Roy, Hiralal, Mirza Musharraf etc in it.

Reviving a wonderful qawwaali from one of those not so well known films, and yet a gem of a composition and a fabulous presentation. The film is Mujrim Kaun Khooni Kaun (1965). It is a social drama produced under the banner of Pratima Pictures, Bombay and it is directed by Ramneek Vaidya. The star cast includes Jairaj, Indira aka Indira Billi, Heeralal, Sapru, Shammi, Bela Bose, Asit Sen, Raj Mehra, Brahm Bhardwaj, Gopal Sehgal, Shyam Kumar, V Gopal, Mirza Musharraf, Sherry etc. The lyrics for this film are written by three poets viz., Anjum Jaipuri, Akhtar Romani and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular qawwaali is written by Akhtar Romani. The music composition is by Baabul – another one of the unsung talents that have produced absolutely A class music, but never really got their due recognition in the industry.

“Raat Andheri Thhi” (1967) is a B grade movie about which very little is known these days. Theinformation that I have been able to gather about this movie tells me that this movie had Feroz Khan, Sheikh Mukhtar, Lolita Chaterjee & Helen in it, which makes it an archtypical B grade movie of the 1960s. These movies had Sheikh Mukhtraa playing the same kind of roles that would later be played by amitabh Bachchan in this angrey young man movies. Sheikh Mukhtar would use his bulky figure for strongarm tactics, and he would leave the task of singing and dancing to the chocolate faced side hero of the movie, which happens to be Feroz Khan in this movie.

I am aware of two movies called “Insaaf”. Both of them were B grade movies that were released 10 years apart. “Insaaf” (1956) had Ajit, Nalini Jaiwant,Kamal Kapoor,Helen,Durga Khote etc whereas “Insaaf” (1966) had Prithviraj Kapoor,Dara Singh,Indira,Helen,Sundar,Tuntun,Azaad,Lalita Pawaar,Pravin Chaudhary etc. Both these movies had nice songs in them.
