‘Angulimaal’ (1960) was directed by Vijay Bhatt of Prakash Pictures which had been known for producing mythological and historical films among other genres. The film was a presentation of Thai Information Services Co Ltd. It is said that on the occasion of 2500th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, Thai Government financed the film. I find from the credit title of the film that a Thai sounding name, Viratna Vidyabanich was as one of the production controllers. The star cast consisted of Bharat Bhushan, Nimmi, Anita Guha, Manmohan Krishan, Achala Sachdev, Chandrasekhar, Prem Adib, Ulhas, Kesri, Ram Mohan, Helen, Bimla, Sheila Kashmiri and Master Vinod Kumar (Vinod Mehra). The dialogues were written by a well-known Hindi writer and poet, Bhavani Prasad Mishra, the only film for which he wrote dialogues. Earlier, Bhavani Prasad Mishra had written lyrics for ‘Swayam Siddha’ (1949).

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 22
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

I present here a repeat song that is quite different from the string of songs in this series so far. I shall begin by introducing the original song.

The original song is from the 1953 film – ‘Hamdard’. The song has been written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the music composition is by Anil Biswas. The original song is in the voice of Manna Dey, and it is already posted on the blog a good eight years ago. That post can be viewed at “Tera Haath Haath Mein Aa Gaya”.

The repeat song, this time appearing in the film ‘Tu Nahin Aur Sahi’ from 1960. The song is the same, but for the latter film, it has been re-recorded. The music director of the latter film is Ravi. The second recording is different, both with regards to the composition, as well as the singing voice. The latter song has been recorded in the voice of Rafi Sb, in a tune that is quite different from the original.

I have carried an impression in my mind for a long time that in the 1940s, Anil Biswas rarely used full-throated playback singers like Shamshad Begum, Zeenat Begum, Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Munawwar Sultana etc. This is based on my listening many songs composed by Anil Biswas during the last about one decade. To check my ‘hypothesis’, I glanced through all the songs composed by Anil Biswas which have been tagged under his name in our Blog.

In addition, I went through a couple of websites on Hindi film songs and my excel-sheets of songs for the period 1931-50, partially taken from HFGK. The main conclusions of my ad-hoc research are as under:

  1. Zeenat Begum and Munawwar Sultana did not sing for Anil Biswas though both of them had shifted to Mumbai sometime in 1944.
  2. Although Shamshad Begum had shifted to Mumbai along with the musical team of Ghulam Haider in 1942, Anil Biswas gave her chance to sing under his music direction for the first time in the film ‘Bhookh’ (1947).
  3. Anil Biswas took Zohrabai Ambalewaali for the first time in the film ‘Gramophone Singer’ (1938) followed by ‘Hum Tum Aur Woh’ (1938). After a gap of nearly 9 years, she got a chance to sing for him in ‘Naiyya’ (1947) which happened to be her last film with Anil Biswas as a playback singer.
  4. Ameerbai Karnataki and Anil Biswas started their musical career almost simultaneously in Mumbai during 1935-36 and she sang for him in a couple of films as an actor-singer. But as a playback singer, she got a chance to sing under the music direction of Anil Biswas for the first time in ‘Kismet’ (1943). With the popularity of her songs in this film, Ameerbai Karnataki became one of the topmost playback singers of Hindi films.

Today’s song is from the film Jwar Bhata-44. It is an important film of the 40’s, because it was the Debut film of Dilip Kumar.

In Hindi film industry, the “Trimurti”of Raj, Dev and Dilip dominated the decades of late 40s, 50s and the 60s- a period of about 25 years in the Golden Age of Hindi films. These three were the most popular, most talked about and the most ‘ín demand’ actors when they were in full form. Each one had a dedicated fixed audience for their films. There were others equally,if not better, actors in this period like, Ashok Kumar, Motilal,Balraj Saqhni, Sanjeev Kumar etc, but these three were different.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 35
—————————————————————————

This date ten year ago, viz 8 June 2010 was a relatively prolific day by the then prevailing standards of the blog. As many as four songs were covered that day. Here are their details:

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Nadi kinaare baithke aao Jaageerdaar (1937) 3 songs covered out of 10. The movie made its debut on this date.
Bhar bhar aayen ankhiyaan Samrat Chandragupta (1958) The movie has been YIPPEED by now
Aapne yoon hi dillagi ki thi Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath (1962) The movie has been YIPPEED by now
Aao jhoome gaayen Paraaya Dhan(1971) The movie has been YIPPEED by now

One can see that four songs from four different decades were covered on 8 june 2010. It was my standard practice in the past to cover around six songs in a day, all belonging to different decades. This practice had become difficult to follow during the last months of 2009 and initial months of 2010 because of disruption due to my transfer. By June 2010, I was finally settled in Nagpur and I was trying to regain the glory days of the blog. And this date was the one when I perhaps decided to shift gears and press the accelerator.

It is 8am, on Friday, the 5th June, 2020. We are onto the 157th day of the year, and running through the 23rd week.

It is Kabir Jayanti today, the day of the birth of Sant Kabir Das, one of the main architects of the Bhakti Movement in the 15th century India.

The other important associations of today’s date are – it is the World Environment Day today, as the per the calendar of the United Nations. The other lesser known association for today is – International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. As I checked the internet there are a few more very interesting associations of today’s date, no doubt being driven by business considerations. 🙂

Today’s song is from a comedy musical film – Laadli-49.

During the period 1947 to 1950, there was a spate of comedy and musical films. It was also in this period that Naushad and C Ramchandra played havoc with their music. Films like Bela,Daak Bungla, Do Bhai, Jungle mein mangal, Natak, Shadi se pehle,Shehnai, Gunsundari, Hip Hip Hurray, Khidki, Mera Munna, Suhag raat, Andaz, Badi Behan, barsaat, Ek this ladki, Mahal, Namoona and Patanga stirred the HFM from upside down and then up again !

Today’s song is from a ‘C’ grade stunt film – ‘Return of Mr. Superman’ aka ‘Superman Ki Wapsi’ (1960).

Hindi film industry is full of third grade, mindless and cheap copies of successful foreign films and stories. Indian films can not copy the costly scenes, sets and A grade actors for C grade films, so they make do with childish cheap sets, unknown producers or directors, actors who are at the fag end of their careers and overall an easy treatment to films. It is painful to see such films.

Today’s song is from an old film Ek hi Rasta-39. The film was made by Sagar movietone. It was directed by Mehboob Khan and the music was by Anil Biswas. These two legends actually established themselves in the cinema industry through Sagar Movietyone, which rightly included their names in their list of ” Jewels of Sagar “.
