#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

———————————————–————

Today 26th Janunary’2022 is the seventy-third Republic Day of our country India.

On this day we celebrate our ‘republic’ and pay tributes to all who fought for the freedom of our country. It is because of them that we the ‘new generations’ enjoy the ‘fruits of freedom’.

On this blog we celebrate this day by listening to patriotic songs as well as songs praising our motherland.
Films on patriotic themes and on the biographies of great martyrs have been made from time to time. Such films are watched with equal enthusiasm all over. There is a long list of films made on patriotic themes, biographies of great leaders, freedom fighters and martyrs. Such movies serves to remind us of the great culture, rich heritage, and diverse traditions of our country.

We as Indians use the great resources, nature, and flora and fauna of this land. Our country has different seasons which helps in growing crops and feeding the people. Ours is the country bestowed with rich treasures of nature.

Therefore, we do have a collective responsibility to take care of our motherland which has given us so much to sustain our lives. It is our duty to protect the honour of our motherland. It is our duty to express our gratitude towards our ‘Matru Bhoomi’.

Today I am presenting a song which expresses the above mentioned sentiments.

This song is from the ‘1971’ movie ‘Balidaan’.

“Balidaan-1971” was directed by Ravi Tandon for ‘Verma Films Enterprises, Bombay’.It was produced by Aroon Varma and Darshan. It had Saira Banu, Manoj Kumar, Dev Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, Manmohan, Poornima, Manmohan, Anwar Hussain, Randhir, Asit Sen, Polsan, Heeralal, Janki Das, Bhushan Tiwari, Devraj, Gulab Singh, Kirti Kumar, Ranveer Raj, Om Sahni, Mahesh Raj, and Bindu and others.

This movie introduced Devyani.

Story of this movie was written by Balkrishna Mouj. Editing of this movie was done by Harish Pathare.

Additional dialogues and final screenplay were written by Manoj Kumar.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 27.12.1971.

‘Balidaan-1971’ had six songs including one multiple version song. All songs for this movie were written by Verma Malik and they were composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.

The details of the songs in this movie are as given below.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 147 # Balidaan -1971#
———————————————–—————————–—

Today 24th July 2021 is the eighty-fourth birthday (born as Harikishan Giri Goswami on 24th July’1937) of actor Manoj Kumar.
I have mentioned it in my earlier posts that Manoj Kumar and his movies have a special place in our heart or in the heart of those, who like me, have grown during the decade of seventies.

People of my generation got to see his earlier movies as well as his movies made when he was on the verge of retirement.

I mentioned earlier movies of Manoj Kumar because old black and white movies of 1960s and 1950s used to have their re runs on screens in 1970s, sometime in one or two shows, and sometimes even in full regular shows in theatres.

We may not have got the opportunity to his initial movies like ‘Fashion’, ‘Sahaara’, ‘Panchayat’, ‘Kaanch Ki Gudiya’, ‘Piya Milan Ki Aas’ etc, But we have been fortunate to get to watch his movies like ‘Woh Kaun Thhi?’, and ‘Hariyaali Aur Raastaa’ from the black and white era.

We also got to watch ‘Gumnaam’, ‘Upkaar’, ‘Saajan’, ‘Purab Aur Paschhim’, ‘Pehchaan’, ‘Roti Kapdaa Aur Makaan’, ‘Sanyaasi, ‘Dus Numberi’, ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’, etc.

I may have seen some more of his movies too with elders without realising it as I was still a child. Some songs from such movies have been in my memory since my childhood. E.g., ‘ik taaraa boley sun sun sun, kya kahe tumse’ from ‘Yaadgaar-1971’. I do not remember to have watched this movie, but this song keeps haunting me as if I had watched it.

I cannot forget my uncles teasing me with the song ‘Ye Gangaram ki samajh mein naa aaye’ in my childhood, may be because I was a ‘gol-matol-healthy boy’ 😊

There were some old movies which used to get screened in noon shows in the seventies and eighties. That is how I got to watch ‘Do Badan’, ‘Saawan Ki Ghataa’, ‘Patthar Ke Sanam’, ‘Anita’, ‘Amaanat’, ‘Neel Kamal’, when I was a grownup boy.

His movies when he was on the verge of retirement included ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan’, and ‘Clerk’ etc. In between I remember I had watched ‘Shor’, ‘Mera Naam Joker’, ‘Be-imaan’ and ‘Pehchaan’ on VCR.

But I am sure I had not watched today’s movie i.e., ‘Balidaan-1972’. Also, I could not remember if I had listened to any songs of this movie except today’s song, which I think I must have heard earlier.

“Balidaan-1971” was directed by Ravi Tandon for ‘Verma Films Enterprises, Bombay’. It was produced by Aroon Varma and Darshan. It had Saira Banu, Manoj Kumar, Dev Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, Manmohan, Poornima, Manmohan, Anwar Hussain, Randhir, Asit Sen, Polsan, Heeralal, Janki Das, Bhushan Tiwari, Devraj, Gulab Singh, Kirti Kumar, Ranveer Raj, Om Sahni, Mahesh Raj, and Bindu and others.

All songs for this movie were written by Verma Malik and composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.

The details of the songs in this movie are as given below.

Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be presented here.

This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Manoj Kumar performing on this song on screen. We can see Saira Banu, Dev Kumar and many others in the picturisation of this song.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No.57
————————————————–

22 August 2010, the day that fell exactly ten years ago, was a day when normal blog service was going on smoothly, which meant six songs were covered on the day, in chronological order. The day began with an iconic song from 1944 movie “Ratan”. Then songs from “Jogan”(1950), “Amaanat”(1955), “Samrat Chandragupta”(1958), “Do Badan”(1966) and “Balidaan”(1971) were covered.

Looking at the time when these songs were posted, I notice that the first song was posted at 5:32 AM in the morning and the last song at 7:49 AM. So it means that I had woken up well before 5 AM in the morning and I was dopne for the day before 8 AM.

Those were the days. I wonder how I had that kind of drive ten years ago, when I would wake up so early in the morning. Not that I slept early. I remember Peevesie’s mom commenting those days -“ye banda sota kab hai !” 🙂

Here is the list of songs that were covered on 22 August 2010:-

Blog post number Song Movie Year Posting time Remarks
2822 O jaane waale baalamwaa laut ke aa laut ke aa Ratan 1944 5:32 YIPPEED (10 songs)
2823 Sakhi ri chitchor nahin aaye Jogan 1950 6:08 YIPPEED (15 songs)

2827 Chale aao dil mein bachaa ke nazar Balidaan 1971 7:49 Made its debut. So far 2 songs covered(out of 6)

The first five movies that were covered on that day have since been YIPPEED. The only unYIPPEED movie is “Balidaan”(1971). This movie had made its debut in the blog ten years ago. One more song from the movie has been covered almost nine years later on 17 may 2019.

Song Date of posting
Chale aao dil mein bachaa ke nazar 22 Aug 2010
Haay haay re daiyya mui main to kyun jawaan hui 17 May 2019

“Balidaan”(1971) was produced by Aroon Varma and directed by Ravi Tandon for Verma Films Enterprises. The movie had Saira Banu, Manoj Kumar, Dev Kumar, Bindu, Anwar Hussain, Asit Sen, Randhir, Polson, Murad, Hiralal, Joginder, Bhushan Tiwari, Kirti Kumar, Ranvir Raj, Dev Raj, Om Sahni, Gulab Singh, Mahesh Raj, Janki Das, Murad, Manmohan, Purnima etc. The movie introduced Devyani.

Today, as part of “Blog Ten Year Challenge”, here is the third song from “Balidaan”(1971) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Lata. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

The song is picturised on Saira Bano, with Manoj Kumar and Manmohan also seen in the picturisation. The song is “Jab tak hai jaan main naachhongi” genre of song, where the villain Manmohan had Manoj Kumar tied up and Saira Bano must dance to save his life. 🙂

The video is available as part of the film but that is without sound.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Lyrics (Perovided by Prakashchandra)(based on audio link)

o jhoothhi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey
gunaahon ke putley
hawas ke bhikhaari
agar zindagi ne diya saath mera
to ik din mitaa doongi hasti tumhaari
o jhoothi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey
gunaahon ke putley
hawas ke bhikhaari
agar zindagi ne diya saath mera
to ik din mitaa doongi hasti tumhaari
o jhoothhi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey

meri aabroo aaj be-aabroo hai
lo hasrat nikaalo
lagi ko bujhaa lo o
meri aabroo aaj be-aabroo hai
lo hasrat nikaalo
lagi ko bujhaa lo o
issey aaj nazron se jaancho ya parkho
issey chaahey mehfil ki raunaq banaa lo
magar soch kar haath aagey badhaana
magar soch kar haath aagey badhaana
qasam khaa ke kehti hain aankhein kunwaari

gunaahon ke putley
hawas ke bhikhaari
agar zindagi ne diya saath mera
to ik din mitaa doongi hasti tumhari
o jhoothhi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey

o paagal lutere
o naadaan qaatil
utthaa apna khanjar
tu kya sochtaa hai ae
o paagal lutere
o naadaan qaatil
utthaa apna khanjar
tu kya sochtaa hai
tere zulm ki intehaa hai jahaan par
wahin se mere sabr ka ibtidaa hai
o zaalim main uss desh ki laadli hoon
o zaalim main uss desh ki laadli hoon
jahaan jaan se bhi izzat hai pyaari
o jhoothhi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey
gunaahon ke putley
hawas ke bhikhaari
agar zindagi ne diya saath mera
to ik din mitaa doongi hasti tumhari
o jhoothhi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey

kahaan so gaya hai tu duniya ke maalik
tere is jahaan mein kya ho raha hai ae
kahaan so gaya hai tu duniya ke maalik
tere is jahaan mein kya ho raha hai ae
meri jholi mein aaj insaaf bhar dey
main samjhoongi koi mera bhi khuda hai
agar na hua aaj insaaf tujh se ae
agar na hua aaj insaaf tujh se
to rakh doon jalaa ke khudaai tumhaari
o jhoothhi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey
gunaahon ke putley
hawas ke bhikhaari
agar zindagi ne diya saath mera
to ik din mitaa doongi hasti tumhaari
o jhoothhi muhabbat ke bhookhey darindey
gunaahon ke putley
hawas ke bhikhaari
agar zindagi ne diya saath mera

“Balidaan”(1971) was produced by Arun Verma and directed by Ravi Tandon. This movie had Manoj Kumar, Saira Banu, Dev Kumar, Anwar Hussan, Bindu, Manmohan etc in it.

This obscure movie had six songs in it. One song from the movie has been covered in the blog. That one song was discussed nine years ago, viz on 22 august 2010 by Raja.

I was not aware of the movie, but it turned out that Ava, our knowldegeable regular was not only aware of the movie, she also pointed out that Ravi Tandon (father of Raveena Tandon) made his debut as a director with this movie.

Now, nine years later, here is the second song from “Balidaan”(1971) to appear in the blog. This song is a dance song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle, with a few lines by Mahendra Kapoor. I am unable to tell who is the female dancer lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. She vaguely resembles Bindu, but I cannot be sure. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her. Manoj Kumar lip syncs in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice in the picturisation of this dance song. There are many others in the picturisation. I can identify Manmohan among them.

Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

I am unable to get a couple of worrds right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections as applicable.
