The usual love stories constituted the bulk of storyline in mainstream Hindi movies of the past. The fact that history and mythology provided such rich sources of stories that could be used was not given much thought by mainstream movie makers. It was left to movie makers of smaller resources (makers of B grade movies) to make movies on such topics that were regarded as risky and unviable by mainstream movie makers.

“Jahaan Ara” (1964) was a movie based on the life of Jahaan Ara,daughter of Emperor Shahjahaan. The movie, when it was released , was a monumental failure, and the movie was withdrawn from movie halls in less than a week.

“Champaakali” (1957) is a movie starring Bharat Bhushan, Suchitra Sen, Shubha Khote etc. This movie is known for some Hemant Kumar songs including the well known song Chhup gaya koyi re door se pukaar ke. I have in fact discussed as many as three songs from this movie in the past.
