‘Mere Bhaiyya’ (1972) was produced by Tarachand Barjatya under the banner of Rajshree Productions and was directed by Satyen Bose. The cast included Vijay Arora, Nazima, Suresh Chatwal, Anita Guha, Bipin Gupta, Durga Khote, Manisha, Manik Dutt, Tarun Ghosh, Shail Chaturvedi, Ram Singh, Murad etc. The film was based on a popular Marathi play, ‘Vaahato Hee Durvaanchi Judi’ (meaning in English: Offering the Sacred Grass) written, produced and directed by Bal Kolhatkar who also acted in the play in the role of the brother. The play was first staged in in 1964 and became very popular.

Today’s song is from film ‘Sautela Bhai’ (1962). This film was about the divine quality of brotherly love between step-brothers, like Ram-Laxman or Ram-Bharat. The film had its quota of all possible tear jerking emotions and the artful close relatives who would enjoy the sorrow and misery of the otherwise united family. Actually, this was a most suitable story for a south Indian film, like AVM, who specialised in such movies.

Yesterday was another day with no posts in the blog. I began a long and gruelling return journey from early hours of yesterday and arrived back this morning, some 28 hours later. I was able to connect on the internet during this journey but I spent this time catching up with the pending housekeeping works of the blog instead of trying to discuss more songs which would have resulting in postponing the housekeeping works even further.

Vasant Desai had a fairly long stint of thirty plus years in the film industry, and yet his total assignments as a music director are less than fifty. It is said that he did not take up or did not get many assignments because of his style. His style is deeply rooted in the classical and folk traditions, and he maintained that style throughout his career. In the 60s and 70s, his assignments are few and far between, and yet, with each outing as a composer, he has left an indelible mark.
