The ‘parallel cinema’ refers to films which have been made as the alternative to the mainstream commercial films. Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil are regarded as the ‘parallel cinema stars’ because they mostly worked in woman-centric parallel films and most of their such films like ‘Ankur’ (1974), ‘Nishant’ (1975), ‘Manthan’ (1976), ‘Bhumika’ (1977), ’Arth’ (1982) etc were box office success. Shabana Azmi, with the success of her very first parallel film, started acting in the mainstream commercial films with ‘Fakira’ (1976) in a lead role. R. Gnanathesikan is an Indian musician, arranger, conductor, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and playback singer popular for his works in Indian cinema, predominately in Tamil in addition to Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films. Regarded as one of the most prolific composers, in a career spanning over forty-nine years, he has composed over 8,600 songs, provided film scores for about 1,523 feature films in nine languages, and performed in over 20,000 concerts. He is nicknamed “Isaignani” (the musical sage) and is often referred to as “Maestro”, the title conferred to him by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London. We also know him as “Ilaiyaraja”.

“Bewafaai-1985” was directed by R. Thyagarajan for ‘Devar Films, Madras’. It has Rajesh Khanna, Rajinikant, Tina Munim, Padmini Kolhapure, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Pran, Vijay Arora, Guru Bachan, Prem Kumar, Anand, H. Vijay Kumar, Raj Baldev Raj, Peelu Wadiya, Guddi, Babli and others. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 01.07.1985. This movie has as many as nine songs which were contributed by three lyricist viz. Indeewar (two songs), Farooque Kaiser (three songs), and Hasan Kamal (four songs). Music for “Bewafaai-1985” is composed by Bappi Lahiri. The singers for this movie include Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, and Lata Mangeshkar.

‘Do Matwaale’ (1966) was jointly produced by Randhawa and Kamran under the banner of Rainbow Films and was directed by Kamran who also wrote the story. The cast included Randhawa and Malika in lead roles supported by Kamran, Madan Puri, Sunder, Helen, Amar, Meenaxi, Khursheed Khan, Madhumati, Jerry, Sadhana Khote etc. The film was released on November 16, 1966. This was the last film in which Randhawa and Malika worked together.

“Kaash” (1987) was produced by Anwar Ali & F.K. Rattonsey & directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Dimple Kapadia- Jackie Shroff- Master Makrand Joshi formed the main cast, with Anupam Kher playing a character that was important for the story viz. he played the third angle of the love triangle; of course Jackie & Dimple were the other two angles. Akash Khurana, Dalip Tahil, Mehmood, Mukri, R.S. Chopra, Kamal Chopra, Avtar Gill, Satish Kaushik, Vikas Anand, Subbiraj, Raju Kher all had small important parts to play; tagged as either special or guest appearance in the titles of the film.

Qawwali songs have been an integral part of Hindi Film Music and there have been many memorable and immortal qawwalis that we have enjoyed that Hindi Film Movies and Music have produced.

Since my childhood I have been very fascinated by ‘Qawwali’ songs and after coming into contact with this blog I have shared many Qawwalis too.
I have also presented a series of Qawwalis from the seventies wherein I presented fourteen qawwali songs.
