Today’s song is from a C grade film called Baghi Sardar (1956).
I remember once Atul ji had expressed his opinion that ‘many times the B and C grade films provide A grade music’. I tend to agree with his opinion on this issue. There are many examples of songs from costume, stunt, action and religious films which became very popular. Off hand I remember at least two songs. The first was “Zara Saamne To Aa O Chhaliye” from a religious film ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’ (1957). It was sung by Lata and Rafi, written by Bharat Vyas and music was by SN Tripathi. This song not only became very popular, but it became the No. 1 song on Binaca Geet Mala for 4 weeks. The second was a Rafi song “Parwardigar e Aalam, Tera Hi Hai Sahara” from the film ‘Hatimtai’ (1956). There was another song also from this film”Jhoomti Hai Nazar Jhoomta Hai Pyaar” which too became very popular. This was a costume film.

Most Indian patriotic movies are jingoistic and boastfuul, but this patriotic movie sought to inspire Indians to make India great again through deeds and not by rhetoric. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Asha Parekh, Joy Mukherjee,Helen , Jageerdaar, Agha, Leela, Chitnis, Mubarak, Vijaya Chaudhary, Malika, Sheela Rao, Mirza Musharraf, Rav Avtaar, Moni, Chatterjee, Hari Shivdasani, Yogendra, Bob, B K Mukherjee, Sarita, Saibi, Sitaram, < Baby Nasreen, Caeser, Shyam Chatterjee etc in it.

“Chunariya”(1948) was directed by Ravindra Dave for Kuldeep Pictures, Bombay. Mulkraj Bhakri had written the story, dialogues, screen-play and lyrics. For all practical purposes, Mulkraj Bhakri was the producer of the movie as well, though Kuldeep Sehgal was credited as producer and Lekhraj Bhakri as production controller. Almost all persons involved in the making of this movie were displaced from Lahore during partition and this movie was their attempt to establish themselves in Bombay film industry.

‘Chunariya’ (1948) was produced under the banner of Kuldeep Pictures of Lahore-based Kuldeep Sehgal which was his first film in Mumbai after partition. The film was directed by Ravindra Dave. The story, dialogues, screen-play and lyrics were written by Mulk Raj Bhakri. The production controller was his brother, Lekh Raj Bhakri. The star cast included Manorama and Wasti in the lead role with Randhir, Pran, Sophia, Cuckoo, Narbada Shankar, Mehdi Raza, Chand Burque, Baij Sharma etc in subsidiary roles.

Not many films are made on Kashmir, though Kashmir featured in many films for filming songs etc. In the last 80 odd years, only 5 films have been made i.e. films having the name Kashmir in their titles. As such filmmakers were wary of making films on Kashmir. Being a controversial subject, they knew that the Government would surely ban the films, so as not to displease Pakistan. Thankfully, now the situation is different and films on subjects of national interest and glory are being made freely, without Government’s interference. This is true freedom for the Art. Many politically bold, revealing films, as well as films applauding our Army are being made.
