The peculiarity of the choice of words and themes of songs in Hindi films will probably never cease to surprise. As we continue to unearth more and more unheard songs, we continue to come across songs that will make one wonder and bring a laugh at the same time. Looking for something else, I bumped into this song just a little while ago. I had not heard this song before. And in just one listen, I am completely bowled over.

Many online sources of information indicate that Khaiyyaam made his debut in 1953 with the film ‘Footpath’. This information is erroneous. Zahur Khan, better known as Khaiyyaam, has actually been active as a music director since 1947/48. During the years from 1947 to 1953, he was using a different pseudonym. In this period, he composed music under the name of ‘Sharma ji’. He once shared in an interview, the reason for why he used the name ‘Sharma ji’. His strong interest was music and he moved to Bombay to make a career in films. The years of 1946-47 were very intense with the issues of independence and also the partition of India. A deep divide had occurred between the communities, and a large contingent of film wallahs opted to move to Pakistan.

I dont know how it is that I am finding songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri again and again. The song which is under discussion is from the film “Ardhangini”. From the other songs posted here and seen on youtube it is seen that this film stars Meena Kumar and Raj Kumar, and from the title and songs I assume this to be similar type of social film like ‘Aarti”.

“Maha Pooja” (1954), as the name suggests, was a low budget religious mythological movie, the kind which was partonised in rural and semi rural areas rather than in big cities. It was an Amar Jyoti Films production. It was directed by Shanti Kumar. The credit for this movie shows names like Amirbai Karnataki, Shashi Kapoor, Anant Marathe, Naina, Prem Adib, Ratnamala etc in it. I am certain that the Shashi Kapoor of this movie is different from the brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor.

“Shart” (1954) was a Filmistan Production. The movie was directed by B Mitra. The movie had Deepak, Shyama, Shashikala, Mohana, Sulochana, Chaman Puri, Jagdish Kanwal, I. S. Johar etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt and chorus. I had great difficulty in identifying the actors in the picturisation. They are all familiar faces but they are so young in this picturisation that they are almost unrecognisable. Shashikala lip syncs in Geeta Dutt’s voice. Her accomplice in this picturisation is played by a thin bearded person, who is none other that I S Johar. From the picturisation, it seems that they are upto some mischief as befit the conduct of villains in Hindi movies.
