Yesterday (17 january 2016) was in some way a special day for music lovers, quite a few of them being regulars of this blog. As it is, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopedia was planning to go to South, where he stayed at Hosur. Taking advantage of his presence there, a meeting of likeminded music lovers was organised in Bangalore. The lead in organising this meet was taken by Gajendra Khanna who decided to hold this meet in his residence. as it is, he is holding musical meets in his residence regularly and so he was quite an old hand in such matters.

I first came to know about the story of Panna Dai in the Rajput history lesson during my school days. The only thing I remember of the story till a few days back was that Panna Dai sacrificed her own son to save the future Maharana of Mewad, Udai Singh for whom she was the Dai (Nanny). One of the 8 films made and released in 1938 from the ‘factory’ of Ranjit Movietone was an obscure movie PROFESSOR WAMAN, M.Sc. (1938). The film, belonging to the genre of crime and mystery, was directed by Manibhai Vyas who made his debut as a director with this film. The star cast included E. Billimoria, Mazhar Khan, Sunita Devi, Beg, Sitara Devi, Rajkumari, Waheedan Bai etc. The film had 8 songs written by P L Santoshi and were set to music by Gyan Dutt. The film was released on 10th December 1938.
