Muqaabla hamse na karo

This song pits Vyjyantimala, a professionally trained classical dancer ( arguably the best ever female classical dancer in Bollywood history- notwithstanding Padmini, Hema Malini,Jayaprada, Meenakshi Sheshadri etc) with Helen, the best known cabaret dancer in Bollywood movies. And Shammi Kapoor has the envious task of acting as the adjudicator.

Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara

I am always sour at the double standards of Indians. The revere “cow” but treat its cousin “bhains” (water buffalo) with ridicule. Many of the pejorative sayings in India are associated with bhains ( viz Kala akshar bhains baraabar, bhains ke aage been bajaana etc.)

For a long time, I have been confused between this song and the song “aaj kal tere mere pyaar ke charche har zubaan par”. There was much in common between these songs. Both songs were sung by Rafi for Shammi Kapoor and Shankar Jaikishan were the music director in both cases.

“Prince” was one of the last movies as lead actor for Shammi Kapoor as well as for Vyjyantimala. And curiously, it was the first and last time that the two of them acted together in a movie.

Yaad kiya dil ne kahaan ho tum

It is a very old song, but very much a gold standard song. I have listened to this song for a long time and liked it very much. Sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata, this is such a lovely “chayageet” kind of song, ideal listening at sleep times, though one can enjoy it anytime, as befits any timeless song, which it certainly is.

This song from “Professor” is shot on outdoor locations, perhaps in Kashmir (Correction- in Darjeeling, as pointed out by Shontou). The song is sung by Rafi and is picturised on Shammi Kapoor. The rolypoly heroine, Kalpana is also there in this song and she appears rather sore at Shammi Kapoor throughout the song. It seems to me that Shammi kapoor’s charms seem to have cut no ice with her in this song.

Teri pyaari pyaari soorat ko

This song swept every award that it was eligible for. This song from “Sasuraal” was the top song in Binaca geetmala final of 1961, and Rafi won Filmfare best male singer award for this song. This was the second time one particular song won these two coveted honours. Rafi himself had achieved the same distinction in the previous year for “Chaudhvin ka chaand ho” for “Chaudhvin ka chaand”.

I recently found a rail song in a Shammi Kapoor movie called ‘Boyfriend”. And now I find that the “professor” song “main chali main chali” is a rail song as well ! And all these days I was thinking that I had already discovered all the rail songs a few months ago. May be I need to watch more Shammi Kapoor songs.

I have posted quite a few lullabies. They are typically sung by females for small kids. But trust Shammi Kapoor to sing a lullaby for his girlfriend ! Yes, this is what he does in this movie called “Boyfriend”.
