You must have heard the famous quotation,”Politics is the last resort of a scoundrel”. Though it is not true in ALL cases,it is used since long.
Similarly, the last resort of young boys who ran away from homes to Bombay in the 30s and 40s (and may be even today) was Hindi Films. For a growing Film industry there was a need for actors, singers, writers, technicians etc. Quantity was always available but quality was questionable. This field did not attract the educated gents from good families. So, whenever any educated i.e. a Graduate joined the industry, he was most welcome and he too would flaunt his degrees proudly. Thus you had a Lyricist named Moti,B.A. and Miss Kamal,B.A. in those days.

“Johar Mehmood in Hongkong”(1971) was produced by K Z Seth and Madan Chopra. It was directed by S A Akbar. The movie had I S Johar, Mehmood, Sonia Sahni, Kamal Kapoor, Tuntun, Manorama, Agha, Mukri, Polson, Pran, Madhumati, Mehmood Junior, Raj Kishore, Murad, Tiwari, Aruna Irani, Haroon etc in it.

“Banarasi Thug” (1962) was a Jubilee Pictures Presentation. It was directed by Lekhraj Bhakri. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Vijaya Chaudhary, Madhumati, Malika, Lalita Pawar, I. S. Johar, Vijaya Choudhry, Radhakrishan, Renu Maker, Jeevankala etc in it.

Remembering IS Johar on the anniversary of his passing away on 10th March.
I S Johar, the redoubtable and simply irrepressible personality of the Hindi cinema world is well known for his versatility, his topicality, and his penchant for being in the news for a variety of reasons. Whether it be multiple marriages or open support for male sterilization, he was a strongly opinionated person, with emphatic views, and yet and aloof and a suave demeanor. He is also known to be a very well read person, and his ‘Question Box’ in the magazine Filmfare, was popular for many years.

I S Johar was quite a maverick character in Hindi movies. He tended to make fun movies. His movies were inspired by the British series “Carry on..”. The titles of this movies, that took an irreverent view of things, tended to be along the lines of “Johar in …..”.

Bachpan ki haseen manzil se

Between 1950s to 1970s, there was a series of British movies whose titles began with “Carry on..” . These movies were low budget comedy movies, whose comedy consisted of parody, farce, slapstick and double entendre, as wikipedia puts it. In India, I S Johar took a leaf out of this “Carry On” series movies, and he produced a few such movies whose titles began with “Johar in..”.
