It was 1958. A singing contest was organized in Bombay, sponsored by Murphy radios. The judges of the contest were the ‘दिग्गज‘ music directors of that era – Naushad, Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra, Vasant Desai and Madan Mohan. With a battery of such illustrious composers sitting in the jury, just be able to participate and perform in their presence, would have been a privilege. And for sure, the best talented aspirants had applied to be part of this contest. The singer that this impressive selection panel honored to be the best singer was a young man, originally from Amritsar, but settled in Bombay since childhood. The interesting thing about this young man was that he had been earlier rejected in auditions by All India Radio and Young India Ltd. (the gramophone records company). Along with being honored as the winner the verdict of this panel, Mahendra Kapoor got an opportunity immediately to sing for some of the music directors on the judge’s panel.

Remembering Mahendra Kapoor on the anniversary of his passing away (27th September).

I had no idea about an obscure film TRIKON KA CHAUTHAA KON(1986) except the unusual title of the film when it was released. How can a triangle by itself have fourth angle. That was my pondering point. The title seems to be the indicative of a complicated story line of the film. I had completely forgotten about of this film until few days back when I came across one of the songs from this film. I liked the song and then I heard two other songs from the film which were also good. So I decided to watch this film which was available on YT.

This is turning out to be a very endearing and a very wonderful revisit to the songs that used to be ‘by heart’ in the school days and radio listening days. I have somewhere the notebooks stashed away, in which I and my sister used to pencil in these songs. Even Atul ji has acknowledged it. In a personal response in email, he mentioned that these are the songs that he had written in his notebook, next to cricket scores of important test matches. 🙂 These songs from the 1970s, generally introduced to our nascent minds and memories over the radio, are some of the dearest treasures ensconced in our hearts. In most cases, the familiarity was just with the song, without any details of films and other credits. That information would come later. First, it was simply the song that made its way inside and has simply been there since.

Now, the maxim of proposes and disposes applies so well to the inception of this new series. Totally unplanned and unexpected for me that I am initiating it today. So here is how it transpired.

The Many Colors of Love #20 – The Gambles of Love
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

nainon se jo naina takraaye to
kaun haara aur kaun jeeta

…….
…….
……..
is pyaar ki baazi mein hans kar
jo dil haara wo sab jeeta
jo dil haara wo sab jeeta

And they often say, the matters of heart are a gamble of life. The game of love is very exacting. And the insistence of the game-master is that no wager is big enough in this game of love. The game is played with odds which at times will compel you to bet everything in an all or nothing deal.

This post turns out to be special. Along with the love series special on the ‘Gambles of Love’, we are also making another celebration that combines surprise with anniversary and milestone. Read on, and you will find out.
