Here is a very very moving song dedicated to those who lay down their lives to protect national boundary from external threats. This song from “haqeeqat” has become an iconic song. Today, now that India is paying its respects to the martyrs who laid down their lives to fight terrorists who had attacked Mumbai, this song is being played in TV channels.

Most of the ghazals we grew up listening to often had heavy duty high sounding words in them whose meanings few people understood. And people not understanding the words would not admit to it either, fearing that he would fall in the estimation of fellow ghazal lovers with such a confession.

“Arth” was an art movie or parallel movie as low budget movies were described as in those days. Apart from the realistic story line which were supposedly based on the life of Mahesh Bhatt, the movie had some nice ghazals. It was one movie that helped popularise ghazals which was a welcome development considering that the other option in Bollywood filmy music those days used to be “disco” songs.

I was a school kid less than 10 years of age, when Pakeejah was being released, and believe it on not, even us pre teens used to discuss Pakeejah in our class, how this movie was going to be Meena Kumari’s best performance, how this movie was supposed to be a magnum opus, etc. We all knew that this movie was in the making for many years.

During 1960-70s, I only wanted to listen to new songs. But with Vividh Bharati, you stood no chance, and Radio Ceylon broadcasted new songs at night only on wednesday in Binaca geetmala. So most often than not, it is songs like this Lata song that I got to hear at night. These days, I would get mesmerised if I listened to this song, but those days, such songs would put me to sleep out of boredom.

Another Lata gem from 1960s. This song from Anupama (1966) was picturised on Surekha ( I thank Raja for this information). The Bollywood actresses those days tended to look like Vyjyantimala, Meena Kumari or Asha Parekh. Surekha looks so much like Asha Parekh in this song. May be that is because of similar appearance, hair style etc.

I have said it a few times and I need to say it again that Lata was at her peak in 1960s as a singer. The number of memorable songs that she churned out during this decade are many. Here is a memorable song from a suspense movie called Kohra.

Lata Mangeshkar was at her zenith in 1960s in my opinion. And she was helped in that by the fact that she was the preferred choice of the best music directors of that time, who also happened to be the all time greatest music directors of Bollywood.
The same could be said about the lyricists. Genuine poets and shayars of the highest class used to write lyrics for the bollywood songs. And the heady mixture of quality singing, lyrics and music was for all to see and listen to.

SituationI have been trying hard to win the affections of my love, but my efforts are meeting with failure, and my advances are repeatedly being rebuffed, and I get no response from her.I am finally reconciled to my fate. Now how would I be feeling and how would I react and express myself in a nice way, without resorting to abusing her ?
Now look at the lyrics below. How beautifully the feelings of a spurned lover have been encapsulated in the simple looking words. No wonder this is one song that one can continue to listen to time and time again.
