KJ Yesudas – the bridge between South Indian and North Indian songs. Classical – both Carnatic and Hindustani, Light Music, Bhajan, and film music have been enriched by this maestro who turns a year older, today the 10th of January. Some people are omnipresent in our lives – Yesudas is one of them. We have grown up hearing him sing “Gori Tera Gaaon Bada Pyaara“, “Kaa Karoon Sajani Aaye Na Baalam“, “Dil Ke Tukde Tukde Karke Muskura Ke Chal Diye“, “Koi Gaata Main So Jaata” and numerous other songs. And for his fans who also understand other languages “Mayechi Sauli” from ‘Nanand Bhavajay’ (1991), and a few songs in Bengali, Oriya, and a few international languages too. I am not listing his songs from South Indian films that will be on the personal playlists of his fans.

Films are regarded as director’s medium. He is like a captain of the ship. It is the director’s responsibility to make his film successful – critically as well as financially.

A film director may have directed many successful films but he will generally be known by his one classic cult film. For instance, when we talk about PC Barua, ‘Devdas’ (1935) comes to our mind first though he had directed other successful films like ‘Mukti’ (1937) and ‘Jawaab’ (1942).  In case of Mehboob Khan, it is ‘Mother India’ (1957) though he had directed many successful films in the 1940s. K Asif and ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960), Guru Dutt and ‘Pyaasa’, (1957) and Kamal Amrohi and ‘Pakeezah’ (1972) are inseparable. In the international arena, Raj Kapoor is known more for his film, ‘Aawaara’ (1951) than other equally successful films. This is not an exhaustive list.

Hullo Atuldom

Back to writing after a gap of 3 weeks. Lovely three weeks. Spent among the hills of North- East India and South India. Must thank my nephew for insisting that I accompany them. If the Himalayas and its snow-clad peaks are a heavenly sight so are the mountain ranges of the Nilgiris in the south – the common feature being acres of tea gardens. For the second weekend outing to the Nilgiris, I hold my son and niece responsible.

Today, 21st June is designated as the World Music Day. The reminders checked in quite late in the afternoon today. The historical details about this event are available on the internet, and our dear Arun ji has also summarized them in a brief post on the Whatsapp group.

As I set down thinking about this event, and to search out an appropriate song for today, my mind almost immediately went to the 1985 film ‘Sur Sangam’.  In my mind, this is probably the best film on the theme of classical music, in the recent decades. Times are past that classical music and the legends of this art form used to be the central themes of many a film, especially from the historical perspective, in the decades that coincide with the golden era of Hindi film music. Historical persona such as Tansen and Baiju, Narsi Mehta and Meerabai, Kalidas and Soordas, Kabir and Rani Roopmati have been central themes and central characters of many a film till the decade of 1970s. Beyond that, I cannot easily recall a film whose theme and storyline is based primarily on classical music.
