Hullo Atuldom
KJ Yesudas – the bridge between South Indian and North Indian songs. Classical – both Carnatic and Hindustani, Light Music, Bhajan, and film music have been enriched by this maestro who turns a year older, today the 10th of January. Some people are omnipresent in our lives – Yesudas is one of them. We have grown up hearing him sing “Gori Tera Gaaon Bada Pyaara“, “Kaa Karoon Sajani Aaye Na Baalam“, “Dil Ke Tukde Tukde Karke Muskura Ke Chal Diye“, “Koi Gaata Main So Jaata” and numerous other songs. And for his fans who also understand other languages “Mayechi Sauli” from ‘Nanand Bhavajay’ (1991), and a few songs in Bengali, Oriya, and a few international languages too. I am not listing his songs from South Indian films that will be on the personal playlists of his fans.
I cannot forget that it was Yesudas’s voice that made me (a certified Bollywood addict) appreciate some Krishna bhajans “Krishna Ne Begane Baaro” (for one) and the lori (lullaby) that is played in the Sabarimala Temple before the temple closes for the day “Harivarasanam” (a video that was uploaded five years back) (original recording). I am sure there will be followers of the blog who will be able to give us a list of their favourite bhajans that were rendered by the legend KJ Yesudas.
In my honest opinion he is a fit recipient of the Padma Awards- Padma Shri in 1975, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2017. Additionally he has won eight National awards for Best singer and numerous State Awards and Filmfare Awards. It is a measure of his stature that Swaralaya award for music artistes in recognition of their outstanding performance is named ‘Swaralaya Yesudas Award”- this award is instituted by a Kerala entertainment channel and Swaralaya an organisation that promotes music. I can go on and on about all the awards that he has been bestowed upon.
As I set out to write this post I had a feeling that we may have run out songs by Dasettan (as he is addressed by his Malayalee fans) I find that we have only 62 songs from Hindi films on the blog, so that means we have a long way to go.
Today we are going to hear a song from ‘Maha Shaktimaan’ (1985). I don’t recall anything about this movie even if it is a release of the ’80s, other than the ‘non-ear non-eye’ friendly Asha Bhonsle song ‘Mamalu Mamalu’ (this also I recalled when I googled for songs of this film). But thankfully there is a better song in this movie which is sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy and Yesudas, a song which has Yesudas’s trademark classical touch to it. The music director for this movie is Bappi Lahiri and Indeevar was the lyricist. The movie seems to have had only three songs and cast that had Meenakshi Sheshadri, Raj Babbar, Kim, Danny, Pradeep Kumar, Urmila Bhatt, Karan Shah, Jaya Malini etc. From the poster in the video of the accompanying song it appears like a dance of Raj Babbar and Meenakshi, but since I didn’t find a video to go with it we cannot be sure.
Song – Ang Ang Mein Chhand Basey Hain (Maha Shaktimaan) (1985) Singer – Yesudas, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Lyrics – Indeevar, MD – Bappi Lahiri
