Madhubala-1950, A Ranjit Movietone film, directed by Prahlad Dutt had music by Pt.Lachhiram. The cast of the film was Madhubala, Dev Anand, Jeevan, Randhir, Manju, Ram Avatar and others.

We have been taught in our school that 2=2 is 4. But in life, sometimes 2+2 is also 22 like, when a Love marriage is by the willing consent of both the families, or getting a child after 10 years of marriage or when your son stands First and wins a Gold medal in his MBBS course, it is the 2+2=22 ! Similarly when ‘Rati’ and ‘Madan’ come together, it is 2+2=22 ! In our language, when the eternal beauty Madhubala pairs with the handsome, young Dev Anand it is 2+2=22 again.

In the film Madhubala-1950, when these two were paired, no wonder people were ecstatic and crowded the cinema halls. No one bothered if the story was weak or the music was third rate. These two were enough to please them. Here, of course the story was good and the music too !

Today’s song is from the film Madhubala-1950.

When I have no specific song or a film in mind to write about, I scan through the HFGK or the index of Film titles. When a name creates curiosity or interest, I go to the HFGK for details. My first choice is a singer whose style and songs I like. The second point is the Mukhda of the song to get an idea of the song. If these things evoke some feelings in me, I go through the later steps- like to find out if this is still not yet posted on the Blog, whether it is available on YouTube and if it is in full length etc etc.

Hullo Atuldom

12th February was the birthday of an Atulite. He has started a series to introduce missing movies of the ’70s, and just as well as movies of 70s will complete 50 years. It is unbelievable that movies that were part of our childhood are 50 years old.

‘Guddi’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Caravan’, ‘Anand’, ‘Anubhav’, ‘Parwana’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, etc all 1971 releases, all which I have seen multiple times. I am sure that these movies would be favourites of a majority of the followers of this blog.

Today’s song is from the film Madhubala-50.

What is the meaning of ‘Sone pe suhaga ‘ or ‘Doodh mein shakkar ‘ or even ‘Saatwe aasmaan par’ ? These and similar expressions are used when more than one pleasing matters are combined. Same is the case with film Madhubala. The most beautiful actress in Hindi film history and the most charming and handsome actor in Hindi cinema worked in this film as the lead pair in this film.Yes, Madhubala and Dev Anand.

In the 1930s and in early 1940s, most of the music directors compose mainly raag-based and folk-based tunes to the lyrics.  The musicians would play the entire melody on their respective instruments in line with the tune. Since, in the absence of playback singing, songs would be recorded live, music directors were constrained to use minimum musical instruments, that too mostly within the options of Indian instruments consisting of harmonium, percussion, tabla/dholak, sitar, saarangi, flute etc.
