Younger music lovers of Bollywood music may not have heard of music director Shamji Ghanshamji. And very little information is available on him in internet.
Readers may have noticed that I have used the word him, and not they for Shamji Ghanshamji. Yes, it was one single individual, who had named himself that way, perhaps to give his name an appearance similar to that of Kalyanji Ananadji.

Some day I will make a list of all the sad songs of Mukesh, and then I will analyse them to find out which song expresses which kind of sadness. I may be able to identify scores of types of sadnesses listening to Mukesh’s songs, and then I will present my thesis to an university and take a doctorate. Not a bad idea, I think.

“Bandini” was a movie that had some of the saddest songs one can come across. Each of these songs could move the audience, not only when the movie was released, but even today, some 45 years later.
Circumstances force Nutan to leave her home without informing anyone, and she leaves her home one night. Of course, she did not know what lay in store for her.

People like me tend to classify bollywood songs simply between sad and happy songs. But there could be so many variations to each of these themes. For instance, sad songs could have so many shades. Mukesh has sung so many sad songs, and they all are different from each other.

As timepass songs go, this must qualify as among the very best timepass songs of all time. The public at that time certainly enjoyed it, as shown by its Binaca geetmala ranking of number 4 in the Binaca geetmala final of 1970.
The topic of the song is an interesting one. Manoj Kumar is a country bumpkin and two girls decide to play matchmakers for him, and show him diferent girls. But Gangaram, our village bumpkin finds himself under severe culture shock on watching the modern girls of 1970, and expresses his disapproval in no uncertain way.

As sad songs go, Mukesh was unparalleled. And it is very difficult to say which of his sad songs were the best. In my opinion, appreciation of music is a highly subjective matter, so one should just enjoy it, without trying to rank them or trying to compare them.
This movie ” Chhoti Behan” (1959) had that immortal Rakhi song, “bhaiya mere rakhi ke bandhan ko nibhana”. In this song, the sister Nanda sings the song and ties rakhi on the wrists of her brothers Balraj Sahni and Rahman.

As a kid in one’s early teens, I was not much into liking a song by its “class”. I was purely a member of the “masses” in 1970s. Still, this song, which now I realise is a “classy” song, was a big favourite of mine. No idea why, perhaps it was the catchy tune that made me fall in love with this song.
Not just me, even my younger brother loved this song, but he disagreed with me about the lyrics. I tried to convince him unsuccessfully that the line was “anhoni path me kaante lakh bichaaye”, where as he was firm in his conviction that it was not “path mein kaante” but ” patle kaante”.

Nostalgia has always been a good topic for songs. There have been quite a few nostalgic songs in Bollywood movies that have become evergreen. Even among nostalgic songs, songs recalling one’s childhood tend to become most unforgettable of all such songs.
One of the most well known and well remembered nostalgic song about childhood is this song from “Devar” sung by Mukesh. This song is unlikely to be forgotten with time. It is simply timeless. Mukesh’s haunting voice and Anand Bakshi’s Shailendra like lyrics, not to forget Roshan’s timeless music, has seen to it.

Situation-You love someone, but she spurns you. You are reconciled to that, as long as she does not rub it in further by showing interest in someone else. How will you express these feelings ?
Look no further than the lyrics of this song. The more I go through the lyrics, the more impressed I am with the lyricist. How coherently he expresses the feelings of a jilted lover.
This song has quite deservingly, become a classic.
