Seeing that India has won the cricket world cup 2011, I, like millions of my countryman, am walking on cloud nine at the moment. The hangover will take a while to go away. The fact that the match was played on saturday and the next day was sunday certainly helped a lot. Some hangover is still there even today on monday.

During the golden era of Hindi movie music (circa 1950-1980), things were quite simple and rudimentary in most fields. Hindi movie songs tended to become popular only if the movie did better, and the movies did better only if they followed certain set formulaes. Movies that tended to deviate from the standard formulae tended to fail and as a result, the songs of such movies too would suffer.

“Sharmilee” (1971) was one of those movies that I lived a lot. This movie and its songs came about at a time when Kishore Kumar and R D Burman had taken the Hindi movie music world by storm. I also happened to be at an impressionable age (8-12 year age group) which meant that I was highly impressed and influenced by the music of that time. Forget me, even the so called grown ups turned out to be just as impressionable as me, as far as liking Kishore Kumar-R D Burman brand of music was concerned.
