Just like Radio Ceylon used to play a K L Saigal song every morning at the stroke of 8 AM in the days gone by, I too am discussing a K L Saigal song every morning. Unlike Radio Ceylon, who re cycled the same usual songs, I am discussing “new” Saigal songs every day. And it is interesting to notice that K L Saigal sang songs that many people may not have heard before.

“Nartaki” (1940) is a movie that had Pankaj Mullick, Leela Desai,Najam, Jagdish Sethi etc. Most of these names ring no bells as far as I am concerned.

“Doctor” (1941) is a movie that was simultaneously made in Bangla and Hindi and this movie catapulted Pankaj Mullick to the zenith of his career. In this movie, he acted, sang as well as composed the music.

I have discussed the songs of the movie “Mirza Ghalib” (1954). This movie was based on the life of poet Mirza Ghalib and it contained many songs which were actually Mirza Ghalib’s poems.

Here is a song from a very old movie called “Meenakshi” (1942). I became aware of this movie because of a farmaish by Sid for this song. This movie had Ahindra Chowdhury, Sadhana Bose and K C Dey in lead roles.

Aayi bahaar aaj aayi bahaar

Watching this song is an education in history, I feel. This song is from “Doctor” (1941) which was a movie from an era when India was still under British rule and independence was still several years into the future. Even the “Quit India” movement by Indian leaders had yet to take place. This movie “Doctor” (1941) was produced by Calcutta’s New Theatre. Those were the days when even the landmark of Calcutta, viz the Howrah Bridge was not yet in existence !
