“Mashaal” (1950) is known mainly for the song ( Upar gagan vishaal )that announced the arrival of Manna Dey as a playback singer of note. But these movie also had other nice songs in it, even though these songs, unlike the Manna Dey song, have been forgotten with time.

“Aanchal” (1960) is a movie that had Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy,Nanda, Sudesh Kumar, Seema Deo etc in it. This movie had some nice songs in it and I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie so far.

Most music lovers, including myself, would think that O P Nayyar’s best phase as a music director was the 1950s. Indeed, professionally he ruled the roost in the 1950s, so much so that many other established music directors too were instructed by their producers to create O P Nayyar kind of music. and we have in fact noticed the music of some other music directors resembling O P Nayyar music in that decade.

“Paighaam” (1959)which was a Gemini Pictures productions, is a movie that had Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar together for the first time. This big budget movie was directed by S S Vasan.

In Hindi movies, we have seen several songs of the “Roothhna-Manaanaa” (Sulking appeasing) genre where one partner (usually the male) tries to appease the sulking partner and succeeds just before the penultimate line in the song is to be sung. 😀

Though the concept of playback singing was introduced in 1930s itself, but actors continued to sing their own songs till late 1940s. It was only in 1950s that the concept of singing actors finally gave way and playback singing finally became the norm.

Though I have discussed as many as seven songs from “Nastik” (1954), I was not aware of this song till a few hours ago.
This song is a bhajan cum public lament. In this song, Ajit, Usha Kiran and others are sitting in a temple in front of the idols of gods and Ajit sings this song. The song states that non believers tend to blame God for their misdeeds, but their efforts to give a bad name to God cannot succeed. God’s flag will always fly high, come what may.
