Manna Dey, with some exceptions, was not a mainsteam singer of choice. His voice was often used for bit actors and sometimes for lead actors too. Most of his songs were supposed to be there for light hearted fun. Yes, Manna Dey would be required to sing a semi classical song, which was supposed to be picturised in a light hearted way.

This movie called “Shabnam” (1964) is a hotchpotch of Arabian Nights, Zorro etc. Those days, comedians were trying their luck acting as heroes. Here Mehmood plays the hero, but just like Jagdeep, Mehmood too failed to click as a hero.

I have already posted two songs from “Kaabuliwaala” (1960). This movie was a very moving tale of a Pathan from Afghanistan who lives in Calcutta away from his family, including his young daughter, and he misses her every day. He adores Minnie ( a young girl) in Calcutta and after initial apprehensions, she too takes to him.

The been music of “Nagin” became so popular that it was widely copied in several songs. Several music directors of that era have used “been” music in their songs.

A few days ago, I posted a song from music director Ravi’s last movie, where he had not only composed the music, but wrote the lyrics and sang the song too. As far as singing songs is concerned, Ravi began singing from his very first movie as an independent music director.

I was aware of movies called “Dushman” featuring K L Saigal in 1938 and Rajesh Khanna in 1971. But it appears that there was a third “Dushman” too which was released in 1957 and it had Dev Anand in lead role.

Here is yet another song about whose existence I was totally ignorant. And what a superb song it is ! It is from the movie “Adhikaar” (1954) from which I have already posted an equally awesome song ( “kamaata hoon bahut kuch” sung by Kishore Kumar and Geeta Dutt).
