January 9th is the birth anniversary of Mahendra Kapoor and the death anniversary of Qamar Jalalabadi ( Om Prakash Bhandari). Qamar Jalalabadi had been writing songs for Hindi films since 1942. Who can forget “sun mere saajnaa” , an immortal song written by him in film AANSOO (1949) among many of his songs. The very fact that he had worked with almost all prominent music directors of his time is a testimony not only of his calibre as a lyricist but also of his pliable nature.

In case of most movies, only a few songs become popular and other songs become forgotten with time. I have found that several of these forgotten songs are superb songs to listen to, and with some luck, they should have become popular songs, instead of ending up into the dustbin of obscurity.

Between 1950s to 1970s, there was a series of British movies whose titles began with “Carry on..” . These movies were low budget comedy movies, whose comedy consisted of parody, farce, slapstick and double entendre, as wikipedia puts it. In India, I S Johar took a leaf out of this “Carry On” series movies, and he produced a few such movies whose titles began with “Johar in..”.

“Miss Bombay” (1957) was not about a female beauty queen, but about a bus called “Miss Bombay”, which is driven by Ajit in the movie. This movie was produced by N C films and it was directed by Kedar Kapoor. The movie had Ajit, Nalini Jaiwant, Bhagwan,Tiwari,Rehman,Vijaylaxmi,Bhudo Adwani,Pravin Pal etc in it. This movie may have led to some fan following among other B grade movie makers, because movies with similar titles, viz. Miss Punjab Mail, Miss Toofaan Mail etc. were produced the next year.

“Rustam e Hind” (1965) is a B grade movie produced by K R films and directed by Kedar Kapoor. This movie had top B grade stars of the day, viz Dara Singh and Mumtaz, as well as others like Helen, Laxmi chhaya, Sham kumar, K.N.Singh, Parveen Paul, Rajan Haksar, Mridula Rani, Randhir, Maruti Rao, TunTun, Mohan Choti, Bihari, Hansa, Haroon, Khurshid, Madhumati, Roopesh Kumar, Parashuram etc.

“Farishta”(1958) is a Pancholi Productions movie which was directed by Ravindra Dave. The star cast of this movie included names like Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Sohrab Modi, Mubarak, Nana Palsikar, Anita Guha, Murad, Mehmood , Sheikh, Mridula etc.

In Hindi movies, most activities are carried out according to a set piece pattern, and that included songs as well. Teasing songs, romantic songs, expression of love song, all of them seem to follow some well laid down guidelines.
