I keep repeating ad infinitum that there are so many great songs lying all around as far as Hindi movie music is concerned. And these gems are not always the creation of well known music directors. Even lesser known and unsung composers have created great songs for which they received no recognition. worse, their creation was later used by other better known musicians as their own.

“Shabistaan” (1951) was an Arabian Nights kind of fantasy movie. Such kind of movie were then regarded as B grade movie. “Stunt” movie was another name for such movies because these movies had lots of fights in them. In fact, Shyam, the hero of this movie, died on the stage of this movie while performing a stunt. He was riding a horse when he fell from the horse and died. To this date, this is regarded as one of the major disasters on the sets of Hindi movies.

The lyrics of most Sajjad Hussain compositions are serious affairs, but this song is an exception. It is a love song alright, but here the lovers have more practical matters to consider instead of talking poetry and astronomy. I was neither aware of this movie called “Ye Dil Kisko Doon” (1963) nor this song from the movie. But the obscurity of this movie is easily explainable when you find out who the lead actor of this movie is. It is Shashi Kapoor- enough said. 😀

In this blog, I post songs mainly from the golden era of Hindi movie music spanning across three decades from 1950s to 1970s. The decades just prior to 1950s, viz 1940s and 1930s were where the decks were cleared for the golden era to commence Listening to songs from these two pioneering decades is an enriching experience as it helps us go down memory lane by more than six to seven decades back to an era when I was not born and even my parents were small kids at that time.

In late 1950s and early 1960s, several comedians were seeking to become heroes in Hindi movies. The names of Johny Walker, Mehmood and Jagdeep readily comes to mind. They all acted as heroes in a few movies each, but keeping a sombre face while acting out serious scenes (viz romantic scenes, sad scenes) was not exactly their strong suit. And that is why most of these ventures ended up in failures.

I maintain that some of the most memorable O P Nayyar compositions have been picturised not on regular heroes, but on a comedian, viz Johny Walker. In some of these movies, Johny Walker in fact played the hero as well.
