“meri awaaz hi pehcaan hain
gar yaad rahe”
So much truth in those words which were part of the lyrics that Gulzar wrote for a song in “Kinaara” (1977). There have been many similar sounding singers but this particular voice had a character of its own. I am speaking of our dear Lata Mangeshkar or Lata didi as she was fondly addressed.
Her association with some movie makers, actors, actresses, music directors & song writers is very well known & documented at many places – both online & offline. We all know the rapport she had with Madan Mohan, Mukesh, Raj Kapoor etc. Her association with Yash Chopra is something that is very often overlooked.
There was a reality show in the 1990s which can be called India’s first music talent search show. The show was conducted jointly by Doordarshan, Lata Mangeshkar & Yash Chopra’s ‘Metavision’. The judging panel had real stalwarts, who knew what they were looking for in the singers. Pandit Jasraj, Bhupen Hazarika, Manna Dey & Lata Mangeshkar (can we doubt their credentials?) were the judges. Annu Kapoor was the host and anchor of the show. Pradip Somasundaram from Thrissur, Kerala & Sunidhi Chauhan from Delhi won the best male & best female awards respectively. The contest was based purely on talent & the singers were judged on various genres, there were no audience SMS or polls or rigging of results. This was in 1996 when Sunidhi Chauhan was just a teenager- she went on to become a playback singer & has a range of songs to her name. Pradip Somasundaram sang a few hundred songs across Malayalam, Tamil & Hindi.
Yash Chopra was a filmmaker who began his career assisting his brother B.R. Chopra in films of the late 1950s. The last film he produced & directed was “Jab Tak Hain Jaan” which released in 2012. Almost all the films he made had songs in Lata didi’s voice; specially the films that he produced & directed definitely had Lata Mangeshkar’s voice in it. There were some films which he just produced which may not have had Lata didi singing in them. But this association was one long-standing one in an industry which is famous for fickle reasons ending famous friendships.
This post is meant to recall two legends (perfect term to describe the two) of the Hindi Film Industry who have given us some wonderful gems. The song accompanying this post is from the 2002 released Yash Chopra produced & Kunal Kohli directed “Mujhse Dosti Karoge”. It had a cast of Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Satish Shah, Kiran Kumar, Smita Jaykar, Himani Shivpuri, Sachin Khedekar, Uday Chopra, Parikshat Sahni etc. The songs were written by Anand Bakshi and Shiv Kumar Sharma’s (of the Shiv-Hari duo) son Rahul Sharma was the music director. He used Lata Mangeshkar, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Pamela Chopra, Sonu Nigam, Alisha Chinai & Asha Bhonsle as playback singers.
By the way yesterday (27th September) was Yash Chopra’s death anniversary & on 25th September Rahul Sharma turned 51. And today Lata Didi would have turned 94.
Like she has said in a song of hers
“rahen naa rahen ham,
mehakaa karenge
ban ke kali,
ban ke sabaa,
baage wafaa mein
rahen naa rahen ham”
she lives amongst us through her songs.
