Dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyya

I always thought that the song “dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyya” from “Mother India” (1957) was a brief song, almost an afterthought. I do not know how I came to believe that. Perhaps I may have watched a brief portion of this song when I watched this movie (some 25 years after the movie was released) or perhaps because I have not heard this song in detail in the past.

There is one genre of movies that is popularly known as Muslim socials. These are love stories among Muslim characters. These movies tend to have spectacular music in it typically composed by Ravi, Naushad,Roshan, Laxmikant Pyarelal etc. The lyrics of these songs are quite poetic with reference to words like “hizaab”, “Bahaar”, “Shokhi”,”mehboob” etc.

When one thinks about a drunkard going past a deserted street at night, then what Mukesh song appropriate to the occasion occurs to one’s mind ? Is it Zindagi khwaab hai (Jaagte Raho) ? This song was picturised on Motilal, who was a distant relative of Mukesh.
