S D Burman was not only an outstanding music director, he was also a singer with a unique singing style and his songs, though few in numbers, have the ability to touch the heart strings of the listeners almost without fail.

One reason why many old songs ( 1970s and earlier) are popular is of course to do with nice music in these songs. Moreover, the music directors ( there were many outstanding music directors at that time) recognised the value of lyrics. And they would wait for lyricists to write their songs.

“Sujata” (1959) was a sad movie, from whatever little I have gathered about it. I have not been able to watch it ( I cannot stand sad movies) but its music is a different matter altogether. S D Burman created some immortal music in this movie.
