‘Darmiyaan’ (1997) was produced by RV Pandit under the banner of PAN Productions and was directed by Kalpana Lajmi who also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues for the film. The main cast included Kiron Kher, Sayaji Shinde, Rita Ganguly, Shahbaaz Khan, Tabu and Arif Zakaria (debutant).
I was familiar with the name of RV Pandit, the producer of the film, since my younger days as a proprietor and publisher of now defunct magazine ‘Imprint’ and a social activist. I came to know about his subsequent avatars as a film producer, hotelier and the publisher of magazines on industrial products through his interviews published on websites online.
RV Pandit was born on December 19, 1940, at Vasai in the outskirt of Mumbai as Thomas Ignatius Rodrigues. He changed his name to Raj Vasant Pandit on 15th August 1947 as he wanted to be a new person on the day India gained independence. He got employment in Jaico Publishing House from where he graduated to become the publisher and the proprietor of ‘Imprint’. Simultaneously, Pandit was involved with his social activities. In the 70s, he was crusading against corruption and in the 90s he was campaigning all over India about AIDs/HIV awareness among the public.
Pandit’s involvement of film industry seems to have started with his social activities. He produced films to spread awareness about the issues which were close to his heart. For examples, ‘Maachis’ (1996) was about the rise of militancy in Punjab after Operation Blue Star in 1984; ‘Jayate’ (1997) exposed the malpractices in medical profession; ‘Train to Pakistan’ (1998) depicted the aftermath of the partition of British India; ‘Nidaan’ (2000) was about AID/HIV awareness.
During his stint with Hindi film industry, Pandit started a campaign for cleaning film industry of the menace of black money. For all the films he produced, he insisted on cheque payment. Probably this may be one of the reasons that he could not garner a good star cast for his films and faced difficulties in distributing his films. Ultimately, he stopped producing films by saying that one man cannot change the system in Hindi film industry.
‘Darmiyaan’ (1997) is a deeply moving film with the story of a fading actress who discovers that her only child, a son is found to be transgender. He is brought up as her brother. A realisation comes to him as he grows that he is a different from other boys. The society shuns him. The declining stardom and a failed affair with an rising actor lead the fading star to depression, alcoholism and gambling, ruining her financial condition. Her son tries to help the mother to his ability but of no avail. The story ends in tragedy as both mother and her son prefer to end their lives as a solution to their problems. The story in some detail is as under:
The film starts with a time frame of 1946 when Zeenat Begum (Kiron Kher) is the star of Hindi films. She is the daughter of a tawaif and Hindustani classical vocalist, (Rita Ganguly). She has a large fan base and film producers are lining up to sign Zeenat as heroine in the film who is also a singer. She has a son, Immi (Arif Zakeria) who is born transgender. This has been kept secret by Zeenat and her mother so as not to affect her filmy career.
Things become out of control when the truth about Immi becomes known. Champa (Sayaji Shinde), the mentor of the eunuch community demands the custody of Immi to them as he belongs to their community. But Zeenat refuses to handover Immi to him. Instead, she raises Immi as her younger brother.
With the news of about Immi spreading in the film industry, Zeenat’s film career nosedives. Her affairs with the hero, Inder Kumar comes to an end as he is now attracted to his new and a youngr heroine, Chitra (Tabu). With the lose of her status as a leading star coupled with Immi as transgender, Zeenat takes to alcohol and gambling and cut off her connection with the film industry. Even her own extended family suggests Zeenat to surrender Immi to Champa. But her maternal instinct would not allow her to do that.
Just to feel Immi as a normal person, Zeenat tries to get Immi the acting roles in the film. At one point, she even arranges with a prostitute to prove Immi that he is masculine. Immi also adopts an abandoned baby to resolve his identity crisis and fails. All these actions create more psychological impact on Immi to get a feeling that he is a different kind of a person than he had during his childhood while playing with his friends.
Realising that he has no place in the society and his mother, Zeenat has lost everything and has no chance of redemption, Immi consumes a glass of milk with poison and then lovingly serves the same glass to his mother. Both pass away with Immi putting at rest his mother on his lap, holding her hands reflecting their maternal bond.
The film had eight songs written by Javed Akhtar which were set to music by Bhupen Hazarika. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, “Pighalta Hua Ye Samaa” rendered by Udit Narayan and Asha Bhosle singing for Shahbaaz Khan and Tabu respectively.
Shahbaaz Khan is the son of Padma Bhushan Ustad Amir Khan of Indore Gharana who was one of the greatest vocalists of Hindustani classical music. Shahbaaz Khan came into limelight with his debutant TV Serial, ‘The Sword of Tipu Suptan’ (1990) in which he enacted the role of Hyder Ali. This was followed by another TV Serial, ‘The Great Maratha’ (1991) in which he did the role of Mahadji Shinde. Since then, he has been continuously working in TV serials (over 40 in numbers). After starting as a lead actor in a couple of film in early 90s, Shahbaaz is also active in films mostly in supporting roles.
The context of the song is that the financier (Preet Oberoi), during the preview of the song of his film, notices that the song is picturised on Zeenat (Kiron Kher) and Inder Kumar (Shahbaz Khan) with whom she is having an affair. The financier gets annoyed and asks the director to change the heroine as he is worried that with her background as the mother of an eunuch, it will affect his film’s performance on the box office. A new heroine, Chitra (Tabu) replaces Zeenat and the song is re-shot with her and Inder Kumar. So, this is a song which is picturised as a part of the film’s shooting.
This is a melodious song musically composed by Bhupen Hazarika to reflect the musical style in tandem with the timeframe of the film’s story.
