Today’s song is unique. It is from the film Laadlaa-54.
One would like to know what is so unique about this song. The answer is that this is the only song in Hindi film music history which is sung by the combination of these four great singers. They are Mohd. Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Shamshad Begum and Asha Bhonsle. As far as I know, It was for the first and last time that these four singers came together to sing a song. Mohd. Rafi features in few songs combining four singers, but not these our four singers. I am amazed how composer Vinod thought of this combination in the first place !

This is a revival of the series ‘Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable(II)’. Part I of the series had reached perfect conclusion with the 10th song ‘na de ilzaam dil unn ko “. Now I feel that part II of the series is also called for. ‘Zarurat eejad ki maa hai’ meaning – necessity is the mother of invention. The saying in urdu felt believable when I was a child. If I ever say this front of my son, he is going to laugh at me, I am sure. He will have hundred examples to disprove the concept.

“Mr Qartoon MA” (1958) was directed by Ved and Madan for Natraj Productions, Bombay. The movie had Johny Walker, Shyama, Mehmood, Kumkum, Raj Mehra, Baij Sharma, Sheila Vaz, Daljeet, Chandabai, Ranjana, Rajan Haksar, Keshav, Abdul Narula etc with Minu Mumtaz in guest role.

Two days ago, Suman ji completed the 79th milestone of her melodic life. It is so hard to believe that she is now so senior in years. Some months back, maybe almost a year, she was in Delhi and was present on stage for a singing performance. Unfortunately I myself was not able to make it. But other friends who had attended had said that she continues to be as impressive in her voice, as she was before. Still as sweet, and ‘sureeli’ as Bharat ji would put it.

If we in this blog pride ourselves in the fact that we “dig” (literally and figuratively) old and obscure songs and share our findings, there have been other HFM lovers who have dug out information about lesser known artists from the past and brought them to limelight. Greta (Memsaab) has done a yeoman’s service in helping bring lesser known faces of Hindi movies to limelight. It is because of her amazing researches on lesser known artists that we now remember the names of artists like Nazir Kashmiri, Laxmi Chhaayaa, Bela Bose, Ted Lyons etc. In fact, I became aware of lead artists like Shakila, Shyama etc mainly because of her articles in her blog. This was in addition to her love for artists like Shammi Kapoor, Dara Singh, Ranjeet etc, of course.

Missing gems from 1950s-Song 1

In the month of January, I had visited Hyderabad-my home town after a gap of about 6 years and I was quite excited about meeting close relatives and school/college friends. I had been in touch with them from Mumbai. They contacted me when I reached Hyderabad and settled down. We decided to meet for Lunch at an appointed day at one of our favourite clubs-Fateh Maidan Club. It was going to be a reunion for 6 friends, including me. Everyone was excited about this meeting. On the appointed day I reached the club at about 12.30 pm. All my fiends-5 of them- were waiting for me. After embracing each other, they all sprang a surprise on me and there appeared my 6th friend, who was not in the pre decided list. He too was from our group, but had settled down in US. He had come to Hyderabad just the previous day and he was invited to meet me . We met after about 20 years and were extremely happy to revive nostalgic memories.

“Chhoomantar” (1956) was a Sadiq Production movie. It was produced and directed by M Sadiq. The movie had Shyama, Karan Dewan, Jagirdar, S. Banerjee, Raj Mehra, Amar, Anita Guha, Johnny Walker etc in it.
