Today’s song is from a film from the early era of the first decade of the Talkie films – Postman aka Abhilasha-1938. First of all, let us take a look at what was happening in 1938, in the Hindi film industry….
1938 was an interesting year in the early life of the Talkie films. The film making studios had firm footing with a studio system and they tried a variety of subjects in their films. In the 88 Hindi films produced in 1938, one finds almost every Genre of film subjects, except perhaps the usual Folk stories and Historical themes. Comedy, Tragedy, Fiction, Jungle stories, Costume, Socials, Musicals, Mythologicals, you name it and you had it. Content and technical expertise had improved as films on famous novels were made.

Today’s song is from the film Holi-1940.
The film was made by Ranjit Movietone, Bombay. The director was A.R.Kardar and the Music was by Khemchand Prakash, who had taken over from Gyan Dutt in the beginning of 1940. The first paid composer of Ranjit was Gyan Dutt from 1937 to 1940. In this period he gave music to 15 films. Khemchand Prakash gave music to 20 films in his period from 1940 to 1945, when Bulo C Rani took over in 1945 onwards. The film cast included Motilal, Ishwarlal,Keshavrao Datey, Lala yakub, Mirza Musharraf, Khursheed, Sitara, Tarabai, Dikshit and Ghori and many others. Actually the major stars of this film , Motilal, Ishwarlal, Sitara and Khursheed were all well known singers. However it was strange that Ishwar lal sang in the voice of Kantilal and Khursheed got the playback of Kalyani in this film, without getting a single song for themself.

Today’s song is from the film Aaj ka Hindustan-1940.
The second world war had already begun in 1939 and the British Government had promulgated many restrictions on the Indian people like rationing of food items. rationing of petrol and other essential items. As far as the Film industry was concerned, the Raw Film used to be imported as it was not yet made in India. The Government started a quota system for the filmmakers, based on a formula of films made in an year on average and many related parameters. This created problems for individual filmmakers who made films at random and had no studio of their own.

Today’s song is from an old film Baghbaan-1938. There was one more film Baghbaan made in 2003, but the story was different. One film having similarity in name was film Baadbaan made in 1954. This too was a different one.
Baghbaan-38 was the first film of A R Kardar as a Director in Bombay, after his very successful foray in to the Calcutta Film world. This film was made by General Films, Bombay. The music was by Mushtaq Hussain, who had a young, ambitious and talented assistant for this film, whose name was Naushad. Yes, he is the same Naushad, who paired with Kardar in later years and gave us unforgettable music from many films.

During the last 15 months or so, I have been concentrating mainly on rare songs from films of 1940s in my articles for the Blog. During this period, I came across some playback singers, music directors and lyricists who were unknown to me. I also got to know about some of the not so famous film production banners. Similarly, I got the opportunity to gather some information on film directors of 1930s and 40s such as Debaki Bose, P C Barua, V Shantaram, A R Kardar, Kishore Sahu, Mehboob Khan, Kidar Sharma etc.

In the decades of 30s and 40s, some of the female singers made it to Hindi films as actors thanks to their ability to sing well. It would appear that in those days, it was more of the singing ability than the acting skills which was the deciding factors for the film producers to pick up the female actors. Some of the prominent singing female actors of that period were Khursheed Bano, Noor Jehan, Kanan Bala, Shanta Apte, Suraiya, Amirbai Karnataki, Rajkumari etc.

The Voice of Mukesh #2
——————————–
Listening to the first song of Mukesh, ‘Dil Hi Bujhaa Huaa Ho To Fasl e Bahaar Kyaa’ from the film ‘Nirdosh’ (1941), one is suitably impressed by this maiden effort from a singer, whom we now know as a stalwart of the Hindi film music. But back then in 1941, this debut happened singularly unacknowledged, failing to impress the public, the music directors and film producers. With Saigal Saab’s voice reigning supreme at that time, most people wrote off this voice as another Saigal imitator, trying to make it good with a voice sounding like the great icon. And what with the icon still in full bloom and alive, this song by Mukesh failed to evoke any great level of interest. And so started the career of Mukesh, unimpressive and indifferent.
