yes, bahut yaad aaye. . . that voice – the magic, the magnetism, the feeling of surreal contentment that descends into the being, and ensconces it with a joyous delight. It is a voice, that now lives only in our memories, or in the ethereal sound waves. The memories are such, they will never be detached till the breaths last. And the sound – they say in our culture that sound is forever; it lives in the space for all times to come. And so will this voice. This voice – of Rafi Sb. This voice that went to sleep 36 years ago, today. 36 years seem to be a long time, a third of a human life already. But it seems just like, well, recently. And the affinity and the magic of this voice has only deepened with time.
Remembering Rafi Sb today, with all humility and respect and love.

Today is monday, 25 july 2016. I was informed yesterday evening by Peevesie’s mom that this day was the birth anniversary of Sudhir Phadke (25 july 1919- 29 july 2002). She added that she unfortunately was not aware of any songs of him.

“Murliwaala”(1951) was directed by Vasant Painter for Madhuvani Chitra, Bombay. This movie had Vijaylaxmi, Shashi Kapoor (sr), Durga Khote, Gulaab, Mahipal, Parshuram, Krishna Kumari, Niranjan Sharma, Vasant rao Pahalwan, Ramesh Sinha etc in it.

At the mention of the name ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’, the mind automatically goes back to the 1948 film, with some wondrous songs like “Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye” sung by Rafi Sb, “Tere Nainon Ne Chori Kiya” sung by Suraiya, and “Itne Door Hain Huzoor Kaise Mulakat Ho” in the voice of Surinder Kaur. The iconic songs of that film were composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

In my pursuit of films with ‘similar titles’, I discovered a movie of 1949 called ‘Maaya Baazaar’. So far, as per information available online I could see that there are three films with the title ‘Maaya Baazaar’ and they were released in 1949, 1958 and 1971.

Prabhat Films, Bombay (now Mumbai) wound-up its glorious innings with this film ‘Gaj Gauri’ in 1958. The surprising fact is that this ‘Pauraanik’ (Religious) film is presumed to be permanently lost. Raja Thakur directed it with the star-cast of Sulochana Latkar, Ratna Mala, Shahu Modak, Anant Kumar, Nana Plasikar, Tara Dixit, Vijay Limaye, Vijay Duggal, Neelam, Vishwas Kunthey, Kelkar, Gramopaadhye, Hemraj, Kishore Paranjape, Narendra Bhandari, Vijay Dixit and a Hathi named ‘Ram Prasad’.

I was thinking of writing a post for a long time but never put thoughts into digital format. I am “The” Ms. Lazybones 🙂
Finally, thanks to the mail thread about the November 7th Gangout in Bangalore which is currently in progress with lots of enthusiasm, I am ready with a post.
In the mail thread, our own Sudhir ji added Srinivas Ganti ji inviting him to the gangout. Though Ganti ji is unable to attend it, he shared with us an article written by him on few of Lata ji’s melodies. Being a die-hard fan of Lata ji, I was completely bowled over. I immediately mailed Ganti ji about re-using his article in a series of posts. I didn’t expect him to reply so fast, I got a reply within one hour. Permission was granted 🙂 Not only that, he even shared a link where transliteration of the lyrics were made available by none other than him.

Today (29 july 2015) is the 13th death anniversary of Sudhir Phadke ( 25 july 1919-29 july 2002). Sudhir Phadke’s talent was not fully harnessed in Hindi movies. Most of his musical activities were in Marathi movies and he went on to become a legend in Marathi Film music, as a music composer as also as a singer.
