During the early 70s when I got interested in Hindi film songs of the golden era. I had heard from my seniors in this field talking about singers, music directors and lyricists of 30s and 40s with some anecdotes. While, I had almost forgotten many of the unfamiliar names over a period of time until the advent of the internet technology, one of very few names which firmly remained in my mind was that of D N Madhok. From their discussions, I had then realised that he must have been an influential lyricist of his time. He was stated to be one of very few lyricists of that time who used to give lyrics to music director with tunes. While this may be a boon for the struggling music directors, my guess is that the established and self-respecting music directors must have surely resented his ‘value addition’ to the lyrics. One of the music directors of the 40s ( I am not very sure but it was probably Shyam Sundar) had a tiff with him on this issue and he never worked with him.

This is a very delightful song from the comedy film EK DO TEEN-1953. The song is sung by Promodini Desai, Asha Bhosle, Meenal Wagh and others. “Khamosh Nigaahen”(1946) is as obscure a movie as any. Hardly any information is available about this movie. Some vague information available about this movie suggest that it was produced by Roop K Shorey and directed by Moti B Gidwani. This movie had Pran, Manorama, Al Nasir, Subhashini, Zahoor Shah etc in it.

“Laadla” (1954) was a Verma Films Production. It was directed by Surya Kumar. The movie had Karan Deewan, Shyama, Agha, Raj Mehra, Krishna Kumari, S. Nazir, Dar Kashmiri, Dev Kishan, Maruti Rao, Sunder, Parwati etc in it.

I had mentioned in one of my earlier write-ups that all the songs from the film ANMOL RATAN (1950) were very rare to get in the 70s even with the individual collectors. Though the film failed miserably at the box office, all the songs from this film were the forgotten ‘ratans’ (gems). We are fortunate that majority of the songs from this film are now available on the internet as audio clips. There are 11 songs in the film of which 5 songs have been discussed in this blog.
