Old songs were not always serious songs or classical songs. There used to be light hearted timepass songs as well, which were not expected to become evergreen songs even by their composers. Popular impression among fans is that Kishore Kumar sang happy songs, Mukesh sang sad songs etc. In reality, every leading singer sang songs of different moods.

Take Rafi for example. He has sung songs covering the entire gamut of human emotions- right from devotional songs to tapori songs. And he would do justice to every song, however insignificant the music director, or the movie, or the actors may be.

This particular song was picturised on bit actors (Brahamchari and Tabassum) who frankly did not deserve to have a song picturised on them. But just look at the enthusiasm with which rafi has sung this song. The gusto with which Rafi has sung this song has elevated this run of the mill timepass song to one of the more memorable songs sung by Rafi. Kudos to the maestro, that is what I can say.

song- Rekha O Rekha jabse tujhe dekha (Adhikar) (1971) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Ramesh Pant, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
khaanaa peenaa sonaa dushvaar ho gayaa
main aadmi tha kaam ka bekaar ho gayaa
hai Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
khaanaa peenaa sonaa dushvaar ho gayaa
main aadmi tha kaam ka bekaar ho gayaa

tumse dil kyaa lagaayaa hai tumako qaatil banaaya hai
are tumse dil kyaa lagaayaa hai tumako qaatil banaaya hai
din raat jalaati ho deevaana banaati ho
din raat jalaati ho deevaana banaati ho
are meraa bhi ek din zaroor aayegaa
hoi hoi hoi Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
khaanaa peenaa sonaa dushvaar ho gayaa
main aadmi tha kaam ka bekaar ho gayaa

kaafi mahanga ye pyaar hai shaadii ka intazaar hai
are kaafi mahanga ye pyaar hai shaadii ka intazaar hai
maalik pe bharosaa hai maine to ye sochaa hai
maalik pe bharosaa hai maine to ye sochaa hai
are mehanat jo ki hai to phal bhi milegaa
hoi hoi hoi Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
khaanaa peenaa sonaa dushvaar ho gayaa
main aadmi tha kaam ka bekaar ho gayaa
hai Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
Rekhaa o Rekhaa jab se tumhen dekhaa
khaanaa peenaa sonaa dushvaar ho gayaa
main aadmii tha kaam kaa bekaar ho gayaa

Trannslation

Rekha o Rekha, ever since I saw you
I have lost my appetite as well as sleep
I was a worthy man, but now I am no good

I have fallen head over heels for you, and you are killing me
Your thought bothers me all the time, and I go mad thinking about you
I am sure my day will soon come
when I will turn the tables on you

This love is costing me dear and I can only wait for the wedding bells
I have faith on the Almighty
I have done the hard work and I am sure I will get the result for that
Rekha o Rekha, ever since I saw you
I have lost my appetite as well as sleep
I was a worthy man, but now I am no good

Wow…kya gaana hai…lots of memories.
Takes me right back to my primary school days.
Total tapori song – total timepass song of its time.

People of today’s generation will never probably hear such songs unless we make an effort to make them aware of them. Maybe that is the only real value of the remix wave, much as I otherwise frown at it.

Very nice, lively song, Atul. Thanks.

I have a lot of backlog to catch up. Backlog of your blogs. 🙂

Raja,
I have played my role in popularising this song. This song was not there in youtube till my post came about.

Hi Atul,

Discovered your blog just today. Nice collection you have got here. Wonderful stuff.

Had always imagined this song by Kishore…. so much for my stereotypes!

Thanks,
Vivek

Welcome to this blog, Vivek.

I always knew it was a song sung by Rafi. It is interesting to imagine how Kishore Kumar would have sung it.

When two singers sing the same song, independently, song of one singer becomes more popular than the other while singing the same song ( or similar songs with the same tune).

For instance, the song “tum bin jaaun kahaan ” was sung by Rafi and Kishore KUmar both and Kishore Kumar’s version became more popular.

Mr. Atul,

I heard this song after a long time. I for one did not know it was a rafi song. Out and out tapori song all right. It must have been composed for kisore kumar, as the MD is RDB.

What i have read about such songs picturised on lesser known actors is that just like Rajesh khanna was a super star and had lot of his cronies around him, kishore was also a superstar with similar cronies. He would often refuse to sing songs for lesser known actors and so such songs were sung by rafi. There are many such examples. “Deewane hain deewanon ko na dar chahiye” from Zanjeer, “Kaun kisiko baandh saka” from (Kaaliya). Needless to say rafi never had any difficulty in doing justice and giving his all to any song, composed with any singer in mind, or to be performed on screen by anybody. Neither in 50s and 60s nor in 70s.

Regards.
