Hansne ki chaah ne kitna mujhe

I grew in that era when masses would run away a mile from classical songs or classical dances. There were few takers for such kind of art.
Those days, some bollywood makers on a shoe string budget would make movies different from mainstream movies. Such movies earned rave reviews and critical praise, but these movies were rejected by masses. Film festivals were often the only place one could watch such movies.
Such movies continue to be anathema to masses, but now, thanks to technology, those who are interested in this kind of stuff can watch such movies again, in their homes, and as many times as they want.
It is so heartwarming to realise that listeners and watchers of this song have voted this song 5 out of 5. It is in such sharp contrast to those days when this movie as well as its songs did not create much ripples at the box office, and on Binaca geetmala respectively.
But this song sung by Manna Dey was popular among classes even those days. For the record, I was a member of the masses, but still I liked this song when I heard it, though not as much as the mainstream songs that I listened to.
The lyricist was someone called Kapil Kumar. Music director was Kanu Roy, and he was a talent who did not get his due in Bollywood. Somehow this hardly comes as a surprise. Catering to masses was always the top priority and people had little time to cater to the infinitesimal group of classy audience.
Now that we have access to this song and its video in internet,I find that listening to this song and watching its video is a rare privilege. It is a beautiful song sung with feeling by Manna Dey. Less known that its lyricist and music directors may be, they have both done a commendable job in this song.

Song- Hansne ki chaah ne kitna mujhe (Aavishkaar) ( 1973) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Kapil Kumar, MD-Kanu Roy
Lyrics
koi hamdard nahin, dard mera saaya hai
saansen chalti hain kabhi kabhi raaton mein
dil to uljha hi raha zindagi ki baaton mein
saansen chalti hain kabhi kabhi raaton mein
kisi ki aah par taaron ko pyaar aaya hai
koi hamdard nahin dard mera saaya hai
koyi hamdard nahin, dard mera saaya hai
koi hamdard nahin, dard mera saaya hai

Great song. Kanu Roy was Geeta Dutt’s brother as you may know. The movie’s a personal favorite.

Great song and great performances from both Kaka and Sharmila in a non-mainstream film. Kanu Roy was Geeta Dutt’s brother as you may know.

By the way Atul can you get the full version of the other song “Naina hai pyase mere”? It’s rather nice too and nicely picturized. Thanks!

Very good song by Manna Dey.
It may not be very well known (since the movie was a sort of “art” movie that did not do too well at the box office) but the song itself is top-class.
