Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Mere naina saawan bhadon

Posted on: January 1, 2009

This movie “Mahbooba” had a story of reincarnation and a haunting haveli. The music of R D Burman created just the right atmosphere for this movie in songs after songs.

The one song that can be said to reflect the mood of the movie most accurately was the haunting song “mere naina saawan bhaadon, phir bhi mera man pyaasa”. This song is as good a song as of its genre that one may have listened to in Bollywood filmy music.

This song has two versions. Kishore Kumar sings the male version and Lata Mangeshkar the female version. Both versions are outstanding. This has to be one of the immortal songs composed by R D Burman.

Lata version

Song-Mere naina, saawan bhaadon, phir bhi mera man pyaasa ( Mehbooba) (1976 ) Singer-Lata/Kishore Kumar, Lyrics- Anand Bakshi, MD- R D Burman

Lyrics

Kishore Kumar version

mere nainaa saavan bhaadon
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa
mere nainaa saavan bhaadon
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa

ai dil deewaane, khel hai kyaa jaane
dard bharaa ye, geet kahaan se
in honthon pe aaye, door kahin le jaaye
bhool gayaa kyaa, bhool ke bhi hai
mujhko yaad zaraa saa,
phir bhi mea man pyaasa…

baat puraani hai, ek kahaani hai
ab sochoon tumhen, yaad nahin hai
ab sochoon nahin bhoole, wo saawan ke jhoole
rut aaye rut jaaye dekar
jhoothaa ek dilaasaa,
phir bhi mera man pyaasa…

barson beet gaye, hamko mile bichhde
bijuri bankar, gagan pe chamki
beete samay ki rekhaa, main ne tum ko dekhaa
man sang aankh-michauli khele
aashaa aur niraashaa,
phir bhi mera man pyaasa…

mere naina saawan bhaadon
phir bhi mera man pyaasa
phir bhi mera man pyaasa
phir si mera man pyaasa

—————————————-

Lata version

mere nainaa saawan bhaadon
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa

O O O
baat puraani hai, ek kahaani hai ho
baat puraani hai,
ab sochoon tumhen, yaad nahin hai
ab sochoon nahin bhoole, wo saawan ke jhoole
rut aaye rut jaaye deke
jhoothaa ek dilaasaa,
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa
O O O

barson beet gaye, hamko mile bichhde
bijuri bankar, gagan pe chamke
beete samay ki rekhaa, main ne tum ko dekhaa
tadap tadap ke is birhan ko aaya chain zara sa
phir bhi meraa man pyaasaa

ghunghroo ki chamcham
ban gayi dil ka gham
doob gaya dil
yaadon me ubhri berang lakeeren
dekho ye tasweeren
soone mahal mein naach rahi hain
abtak ek rakkaasa
phir bhi mera man pyaasa

The movie was a huge flop (I think the hype that preceded it contributed to it becoming a flop) but the songs were OK. In fact they were very good.

Rajesh-Hema (though they were superstars in their own right) never clicked as a pairing quite like Rajesh-Sharmila or Rajesh-Mumtaz or Rajesh-Asha Parekh.

Prem Nagar is the only reasonable hit I can think of that they managed.

If a proof was needed that the sum of two superstars need not necessarily mean a superhit movie, then here lies the proof.

But R D Burman would come up with hit music, no matter how poorly the movie itself fared.

I came into this URL after listening to a Kannada song Vijay Prakash (of “Jai Ho” fame) has sung: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYPOYN64PBk. What singing!
Will Atul please create a word-by-word translation of the Kishore Kumar version of “mere nainaa saavan bhaadon”? Thanks.
