Chanda re ja re ja re

To most of us, singers like Lata and Kishore Kumar are legends. But no one is born a legend. Everyone, including the legends, have to make a beginning somewhere.
The 1948 movie called “Ziddi” was a landmark movie in many respects. Lata Mangeshkar, who was then a struggler ( it may look strange now, but she was indeed a struggler those days and she used to come to recording studios by the local trains). The music director of this movie was a veteran called Khemchand Prakash and he gave chances to many strugglers in this movie. Another of those strugglers was the lyricist called Prem Dhawan.
Prem Dhawan’s song “Chanda ja re ja re” was sung by Lata. This song became very popular and that enabled both Lata and Prem Dhawan to get a foothold in the Bollywood industry. Lata subsequently got to sing “Aayega aanewala” in “Mahal” and then she was on her way.
I was not aware of this 60 years old song till today. It is only today that I have heard this song. One can see that the song has been sung in the style of the singers of those days. Lata was yet to evolve her own style, which she would later do when she firmly established herself in the industry.
Dev Anand and Kamini Kaushal were the lead pair in this movie and this song was picturised on Kamini Kaushal.

This video is embedded from youtube. Searching for old and rare songs takes lots of patience. I am not sure this song is available in mp3 from in the usual mp3 sites.

The prelude to the song reminds me of “Aayega Aanewaala” from Mahal; if I need to trust my failing memory, that too was composed by Khemchand Prakash. Perhaps someone with a better ear, and a grasp of the ragaas could help me out….???
