Zindagi hai kya

“Satyakaam” (1969) is a movie that has long been forgotten though it was a movie that had received rave reviews during its time.
Not just the movie, even its songs failed to take off.
Here is an interesting song from this movie. This song is sung by Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Kumar and chorus. I think it must be one of the rare occasions when these three singers lent their voices in one song.
Kaifi Azmi wrote this light hearted ( yet philosophical) song whereas Laxmikant Pyarelal had composed the music.
Song-Zindagi hai kya (Satyakaam) (1969) Singers-Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
buappaa
buappaa
buappaa
zindagi hai kyaa bolo zindagi hai kyaa
zindagi hai kyaa bolo
zindagi hai lattuu
zindagi hai lattuu
chaahe jahaan nachaa lo chaahe jidhar ghumaa lo
bhaade kaa jaise tattu lattu
zindagi hai lattu
zindagi hai ladki
ladki
zindagi hai ladki
ladki kaa naam mat lo
kyon
uskaa salaam mat lo
kyon
ladki banaaye kadki ladki
zindgi hai ladki
zindgi hai ladki
ladki kaa naam mat lo
mat lo
uskaa salaam mat lo
mat lo
ladki banaaye kadki
lattu nahin hai ladki nahin hai
zindagi hai sachchaayi
mitti ki moorat jab sach boli aadmi tab kahlaayi
aadmi hai kyaa bolo aadmi hai kyaa
aadmi hai kyaa …
aadmi hai bandar
roti uthaake bhaage kapde churaake bhaage
kahalaaye wo sikandar bandar
aadmi hai bandar
aadmi hai bandar
aadmi hai charkhaa
are chun chun hameshaa bole ghon ghon hameshaa dole
rukte kabhi na dekhaa
dekhaa aadmi hai charkhaa
bandar nahin hai charkhaa nahin hai
aadmi kaa kyaa kahnaa
pyaar-mohabbat fitrat uski dosti mazhab usakaa
dosti hai kyaa bolo dosti hai kyaa
dosti hai kyaa …
dosti hai motar are dosti hai motar
sab jismen ghoomte hain
masti mein jhoomte hain
jab tak ki ho na panchar
dosti hai motar
dosti hai lassi uhun aahun
dosti hai lassi
oye pi lo zaraa na chhod bhool se bhi na todo
jaadu ki hai ye rassi
dosti hai rassi
lassi nahin hai rassi nahin hai
dosti dil ki dhadkan
dushmani saharaa-saharaa gar dosti gulshan-gulshan
dosti gulshan-gulshan
buappaa
buappaa
buappaa
uhun aahun

Lovely song. And though it sounds like comedy, there is deep meaning too here (hence you correctly say “philosophical”).
This song was close to the beginning of the movie. After that it became all serious. I remember this being a hugely idealistic movie – one that left a big impression on me when I saw it for the first time.
Indeed the Lata songs in this movie are very good too. But overall the movie is not known so much for its songs as for its idealistic message.
The movie flopped because it was seen as being too idealistic. And therefore unrealistic.
It was made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. In many interviews later in life, Dharmendra referred to this is one of his best movies, even if it did not do well at the box-office.

Strange how you are able to find songs from movies that I can only vaguely even remember hearing about, and these are all good songs that I feel I should have heard about! This was definitely one such song. I didn’t know that Asrani was already acting in movies at that time.
However, there were also a couple of good songs in this movie, sung by Lata, that I do remember – “abhi kya sunoge … ke hai geet adhura taraana adhura …” and “Do din ki zindagi …” In fact, there was another good song by Lata around this time in a Waheeda – Manoj starrer “Yaad rakhoge ki bhool jaaoge …” Now the question is, how do I remember all these songs? Answer: countless games of Antakshari, played in the back row, during Hindi classes!
