Ye raat phir na aayegi

Posted on: February 3, 2010

“Mahal” (1949) was one of the earliest movies of the suspense genre. This movie had some nice songs in it.

I had read a lot about the song “ye raat phir na aayegi”, but I actually listened to this song for the first time only recently. And I must say that I found this song a remarkable song.

This song is one of the earliest mujra songs and perhaps one of the best mujra songs of all time as well.

The song is sung by Zohra Bai Ambalewaali and Raj Kumari. I have no idea who the actresses are on whom this song is picturised. (Hint, hint.. to my knowledgeable readers). Of course there is no mistaking Ashok Kumar in the picturisation.

The song is written by Nakshab and the music direction is by Khemchand Prakash.

This song is easily a timeless classic.

Song-Ye raat phir na aayegi (Mahal) (1949) Singers-Raj Kumari, Zohrabai Ambalewali, Lyrics-Nakshab, MD-Khemchand Prakash

Lyrics

chhun chhun ghungharwaa,
baaje chhun
kahaan hai dhyaan,
kis ki dhun
nazar milaa ke baat sun
ye raat phir na aayegi
ye raat phir na aayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
ye raat phir na aayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi

ye mast raat be piye, nashe mein jhoomti huyi
ye mast raat be piye, nashe mein jhoomti huyi
nazar ko chhedti huyi, dilon ko choomti huyi
nazar ko chhedti huyi, dilon ko choomti huyi
yoon hi guzar gayi agar, khatak rahegi umr bhar
hazaar chaahoge magar, chaahoge magar
ye raat phir na aayegi
ye raat phir na aayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
ye raat phir na aayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi

jawaani gaa rahi hai dil ki dhadkanon ke saaz par
jawaani gaa rahi hai dil ki dhadkanon ke saaz par
chalo kahin bhi le chalo hamaaraa haath thaam kar
chalo kahin bhi le chalo hamaaraa haath thaam kar
kahaan ki fikr, kaisaa gham
hamaaraa jo hai uske ham
tumhaari jaan ki qasam
ye raat phir na aayegi
ye raat phir na aayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
ye raat phir na aayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi
jawaani beet jaayegi

It has a nice echo of “Aayega Aanewale” too. Have no idea who the ladies are, but if you find out let me know 🙂

Actually, one of them (the one dancing not playing the instrument) is Sheila Naik, I’m pretty sure….

My mother thinks that the lady playing the instrument is Johrabai Ambalewali herself.

Wonderful collection of songs, Atul!! Thanks.

What a beautiful song! I have heard this so many times and loved it, but I didn’t know which movie it was from, and now I know it, it seems to be even better this time around. I love the young Ashok Kumar too, and can understand why my mother used to call him “so handsome”!

Thanks, Atul!

This song shows a mujra dance by two small-times actresses, Leela Panday and Sheela Naik. Information taken from the book Awadh Symphony: Notes on a Cultural Interlude by Aslam Mahmud
