Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

I love you o madam

Posted on: August 29, 2010

I can watch songs of a movie any number of times. On the other hand, I find watching the same movie a waste of my time. Perhaps I have become “mature” with time. As a sign of this “maturity”,I would rather spend three hours trying to get the lyrics of a song right than watch the movie containing this song which may take less time.:D

One of the main reasons why I like to listen to songs is that the characters of the movie forget all their woes at least for the duration of the song. Even the baddies/police who are after the singers wait patiently in the sidelines and wait for the song to end before making their move. And there are movies in which songs are the real highlight of the movie which little else of note happening in the remainder of the movie. There are in fact movies that used to become box office success mainly because of its songs.

In fact, there were movies which are unwatcheable and their songs are the only saving grace. I normally tend to believe that a movie with great songs must be a great movie, but my simplistic assumption is not always true.

For example, I thought that “Dulhan” (1958)- based on its songs, must be a great movie to watch. But now I know, thanks to the review of this movie by Memsaab, that this movie is as regressive as any that Hindi movie industry has ever come up with.

It does come as a rude shock to me. When I stumbled upon the songs of thi movie about one month back, I thought I had come across a treasure of great songs. And in fact, it had quite progressive sounding songs in it. It is a pity that the movie itself does not deserve the song that it contains.

Here is a superb song from this movie which is far ahead of its times. This is a stage show, where Nanda and Nirupa Roy enact the roles of a western man and a Bhartiya Naari respectively and wonder how the Twains can meet.

This is a gem of a song, and here we have Geeta Dutt singing for Nanda and Asha Bhonsle singing for Nirupa Roy. S H Bihari is the lyricist and Ravi composed the music.

Here is this superb light hearted song from “Dulhan” (1958). This song is a must listen and must watch song. Alas ! The same cannot be said about the movie itself.

PS-This song is a two part song according to HFGK. The part of the song from “To phir tumko kya maangta madam” is counted as part II of this song.
