Raat bhar ka hai mehmaan andheraa

Nutan played a tragedy role in “Seema” (1955) and with that she stole a march over Meena Kumari in the race for becoming the first tragedy queen of Hindi movies.
In these movies, there was invariably a scene in which Nutan would decide to leave the house accompanied by a background song (in a male voice) that would inform her about the errors of her ways and would exhort her to reconsider her decision. Thus we have songs like Kahan jaa raha hai tu ae jaane waale(Seema)(1955) and O jaane waale ho sake to laut ke aana(Bandini) etc.
Here is another song of the same genre from yet another Nutan movie. This song is from “Sone Ki Chidiya” (1958). This song gets played in the movie more than once. In the main song, it is Rafi who sings the song. Towards the end of the movie, this song gets played again as a movie ending song where Asha Bhonsle too joins in the singing. So this song is a multiple version song.
This song is picturised on Nutan and Baltraj Sahni. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and O P Nayyar is the music director. This rare combination of Sahir Ludhianvi and O P Nayyar was never seen again. Those were the days when Sahir Ludhianvi, after the success of “Pyaasa” (1957) stated in a party that his lyrics had made S D Burman the music director that he had become. O P Nayyar, who overheard Sahir Ludhianvi bad mouthing S D Burman in that party decided to have nothing to do with Sahir Ludhianvi in his future movies.
In fact, leading music directors stopped working with Sahir Ludhianvi from that time because of Sahir Ludhianvi’s insistense that he should be paid more than the music director. After that Sahir only worked with those music directors who were prepared to accept less remuneration than Sahir (perhaps a token one rupee less).

I like this song very much. Nice movie too with Talat Mahmood in a big acting role.

I just love this song and its lyrics for their sheer beauty and hope amidst desperation. Now that you have mentioned it, I see the pattern in Nutan’s serious movies – leaving the house and a song in the background telling her to rethink her decision. However, in each case, the song has been an amazing one, and so is this one. It reminds me of the other song, Woh subah kabhi to aayegi …, in that both songs speak of a better tomorrow, and both have that same dreamy quality to them. Same music director?
