Dil cheez kyaa hai aap meri jaan leejiye

Umrao Jaan was a legendary courtesan of Lucknow, though few people outside Lucknow may be much aware of her. But all that changed in 1980 when the movie “Umrao Jaan” was released. And now, whenever one mentions Umra Jaan, one is reminded of Rekha. Just like many people think that Emperor Akbar looked like Prithviraj Kapoor, many people now think that Umrao Jaan looked like Rekha.
Since the movie “Umrao Jaan” (1980) was based on the life of a courtesan, it was natural that the movie should be full of Mujra songs. That is indeed the case. and these mujra songs are the among the best known mujra songs of all time.
The song that is perhaps the most popular among all the songs of this movie is “dil cheez kyaa hai aap meri jaan leejiye”. Shahariyaar has written wonderful lyrics and this must be one of his most celebrated creations as a lyricist. Khayyam is the music director.
Here is this immortal mujra song from “Umrao Jaan” (1980) which is suung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Rekha, with many other actors, viz Naseeruddin Shah, Faarooque Sheikh etc also visible in the picturisation.

It appears that the pair of Madan Mohan and Asha Bhosle is associated with many of the mujra songs in Hindi films. Khayyam, whose career was advanced partly because of his friend Madan Mohan’s recommendation to the film producers, has surpassed Madan Mohan with the songs in Umrao Jaan. These Asha Bhosle numbers perhaps stand as her best vocal performance of a long and illustrious career.

Please ignore English translation of the lyrics in this video as they have been most horribly done. The plus point is that this video is in HD. One can also see Prema Narayan and Shaukat Azmi, (wife of Urdu Poet, Kaifi Azmi) among others in this song picturisation.
I regard this song as an important milestone in Hindi film music. This song has the best of all – the composition – both poetry and music, singing, the choreography, the dancing and expression of the actress and picturisation.
Now a few words about Dr. Akhlak Mohammed Khan (Shahryar). I don’t remember the contents of a full write up on him which appeared in Times of India 5-6 months back, but I can’t forget one line he said in the interview :’ Bollywood ek jahilon ki jagah hai’ ( Bollywood is a place of illiterates). One can now understand as to why he has written a handful of songs for Hindi films. It is on a suggestion from Shahryar that Muzzafar Ali made the film UMRAO JAAN.
Shahryar is the winner of Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award for Urdu literature. After his retirement from Aligarh Muslim University as Head of Urdu Department, he is now in to full time in Urdu poetry and attends mushairas all over the world.

The best song in the movie, though, is a classical song, not a mujra song–bheeraj mein dhoom. The music teacher in that wonderful ciip is Bharat Bhushan I think (didn’t recognize him at first).
And the sets, the sets are so authentic. Rekha’s most memorable role too.
