Salaam e ishq meri jaan zaraa qubool kar lo

Posted on: October 10, 2010

Normally I post a mix of songs everyday that span decades, singers, actors, music directors etc. But there are special occasions when the songs posted in the blog may have something in common.

The readers of this blog have reminded me that 10th of October is the birthday of Rekha and I should post songs picturised on her. So it means that today I am going to post songs that will be from movies with Rekha in them. And that means the songs today will be “new” songs by my definition, viz songs from 1970s and 1980s.

Here is a song from “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” (1978). Personally I did not like much about the movie, but I was in a minority. The movie, as well as its music hugely popular and to this day I have not been able to understand what was all this fuss about this movie.

I did not like the songs from this movie either, but everyone else did, including the the readers of this blog. So here is this song from “Muqaddar ka Sikandar”(1978) on popular demand.

The song is a mujra song which is sung by Lata and picturised on Rekha. Later on, Kishore Kumar joins the singing, which means Amitabh Bachachan, a patron of Rekha the courtesan also joins in this song. The picturisation shows some other actors too, viz Ram Sethi (Amitabh Bachcahn’s friend) and others.

Though Anjaan is the lyricist of most songs in this movie, it is Prakash Mehra (director of this movie) who is credited as the lyricist of this song. It must be said that he has come up with superb lyrics. I hope Prakash Mehra actually wrote the song, instead of getting it ghost written by someone.

Kalyanji Anandji composed the music.

This song was hugely popular during its time and this song finished as high as number 7 in the Binaca Geetmala final of 1979.

song-Salaam e ishq meri jaan zaraa qubool kar lo (Muqaddar Ka Sikandar) (1978) Singers-Lata, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics- Prakash Mehra, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

ishq waalon se na poochho
ki unki raat kaa aalam
tanhaa kaise guzartaa hai
judaa ho hamsafar jiskaa,
wo usko yaad kartaa hai
na ho jiskaa koi wo
milne ki fariyaad kartaa hai
waah waah waah waah

salaam-e-ishq meri jaan zaraa qubool kar lo
salaam-e-ishq meri jaan zaraa qubool kar lo
tum hamse pyaar karne ki zaraa si bhool kar lo
meraa dil bechain hai
meraa dil bechain hai hamsafar ke liye
meraa dil bechain hai hamsafar ke liye
salaam e ishq meri jaan zaraa qubool kar lo
tum hamse pyaar karne ki zaraa si bhool kar lo
meraa dil bechain hai hamsafar ke liye
meraa dil bechain hai hamsafar ke liye
salaam e ishq meri jaan zaraa qubool kar lo

main sunaaun tumhen baat ik raat ki
main sunaaun tumhen baat ik raat ki
chaand bhi apni poori jawaani pe thaa
dil mein toofaan thaa,
ek armaan thaa
dil kaa toofaan apni rawaani pe thaa
ek baadal udhar se chalaa jhoom ke
ek baadal udhar se chalaa jhoom ke
dekhte dekhte chaand par chhaa gayaa
chaand bhi kho gayaa uski aagosh mein
uff ye kyaa ho gayaa josh hi josh mein
meraa dil dhadkaa,
meraa dil tadpaa,
meraa dil tadpaa kisi ki nazar ke liye
meraa dil tadpaa kisi ki nazar ke liye
salaame-ishq meri jaan zaraa qubool kar lo

aaa aaa aaaa aaaaa aaaa
iske aage ki ab daastaan mujhse sun
sunke teri nazar dabdabaa jaayegi
baat dil ki jo ab tak tere dil mein thi
meraa daawaa hai honthon pe aa jaayegi
tu maseehaa muhabbat ke maaron kaa hai
maseehaa
maseehaa muhabbat ke maaron kaa hai
tu maseehaa muhabbat ke maaron kaa hai
ham teraa naam sunke chale aaye hain
ab daawaa de hamen yaa tu de de zahar
teri mahfil mein ye diljale aaye hain
ek ehsaan kar,
ehsaan kar,
ek ehsaan kar apne mehmaan par
apne mehmaan par ek ehsaan kar
de duaayen,
de duaayen tujhe umr bhar ke liye
de duaayen tujhe umr bhar ke liye
salaame-ishq meri jaan zaraa qubooul kar lo
tum hamse pyaar karne ki zaraa si bhool kar lo
meraa dil bechain hai hamsafar ke liye
meraa dil bechain hai hamsafar ke liye

How I disagree! I loved this movie…I think I am just a few years your junior and was a baby during the Rajesh Khanna phase! Amitabh was OUR superstar (and still is btw) and this was probably his last hurrah as the angry young man IMO. Kaala Patthar along with this I think are my favorites from this phase of his careers besides the great role in Sholay.

And…this song in particular is my favorite from this movie. I especially love the Kishore Kumar/Amitabh part. So though you have posted it as a Rekha song, in my opinion the movie and the song were both “Amitabh’s”. A fairly short role for Rekha anyway. I could not even imagine there were Indians who existed on this planet who did not like this song 😀

Btw, I had heard somewhere that Ram Sethi was actually a good friend of Prakash Mehra’s and was in all his movies. The rumor at that time of course was that he was a good friend of Amitabh!

Ram Sethi was also assistanat to Prakash Mehra.
and arjita so that makes it two of us against atul for loving this movie; for thinking that amitabh was the only superstar and that this was a wonderful song.
oh and by the way rekha was credited as special appearance for this movie. and there was gossip at that time that she did the movie just to be with Amitabh

Most people liked this movie. But I (and also Raja) are two people who disliked this movie.

On the other hand, there are Amitabh Bachchan movies that I liked a lot but majority of people did not. For example, movies like “The Great Gambler”, “Desh Premee” and “Toofaan”.

Me too, me too. Maybe I will get into Amitabh one day but it hasn’t happened as yet. So I’m with Atul and Raja.

Ram Sethi was indeed assistant to Prakash Mehra and he was there in all Amitabh Bachchan movies and in all these movies he would play the role of close friend of Amitabh Bachchan.

Yeah, since a lot of big hits at that time were Prakash Mehra movies, it seemed like Ram Sethi was in all AB movies.

Though a die hard AB fan, even I drew a line at Toofan and Jaadugar era. could not stand those movies when I think he was mindlessly choosing absurd projects. I did like him in the earlier more sober roles like in Jurmana, Bemisaal. Have appreciated him again in movies like Cheeni kum.

I should have mentioned that Ram Sethi played Amitabh Bachchan’s close friend in all Prakash Mehra movies.

You are right.
I really really really really really REALLY did not like this movie.
And in this movie, I really really really really really really really really really really REALLY did not like this song.

Am not sure I have made my opinion of this movie and this song clear enough. 😉

Raja: you are really, really, really clear!

I read this post a bit late. Hence the delayed comment. MKS was a great movie, IMHO. Big B was really bigggg! And as for Rekha, she was divine.

Aah! Zohraaah!!

I agree that this is one of Amitabh’s best film. It was a role only Amitabh could have played. I have seen it many times and love all the songs.. specially salaam-e-ishq and O saathi re. I like how Amitabh refers to Raakhee as ‘memsaab’ and not by her name throughout the movie.

This was also the last time Amitabh and Vinod Khanna appeared together. Their pairing was magical and one of my favorite. they complemented each other very well. I loved them in Hera Pheri, Amar Akbar Anthony and Parvarish as well. Prakash Mehra always gave Amitabh a different persona in every film (Zanjeer, MKS, Namak Halal, Sharaabi- all showcased Amitabh in different light. I guess Amitabh was nominated as Best Actor for Muqaddar Ka Sikandar as well as for Don that year(1978), and won it for Don.

Nevertheless MKS still remains favorite movie of many people from that era.
