Tere pyaar ka aasraa chaahtaa hoon

Posted on: October 28, 2010

Rajendra Kumar was known as Jubilee Kumar in his heydays and it is obvious that he must be having his huge fan following at that time. personally I was not his fan because he was just befotre my time.

Now that I am watching Rajendra Kumar in several songs, I cannot help feel that Rajendra Kumar’s conduct in his movies does not quite meet with my expectations. In most songs I have seen Rajendra Kumar teasing the leading lady, and this teasing is often quite nasty in nature. this is in such contrast to the gentle and cute playful teasing of a Kishore Kumar or the magical midas touch teasing of Shammi Kapoor.

Hindi movie leading ladies are required to fall in love with the hero despite the kind of eve teasing that Rajendra Kumar practiced in his movies on them. The next stage for Rajendra Kumar was to woo the lady publicly, viz by singing a song in a cultural function/ get together, where he would sing songs fun of grandiloquent words.

Listening to all these songs may make one believe that Rajendra Kumar’s love for the leading lady is eternal and he would stand by her through thick and thin a la Sunil Dutt. But is it so ? That is hardly the case ! He would promise the lady that he was going to marry her and would get her pregnant, and when his father would order him to marry the girl chosen by him, Rajendra Kumar would meekly comply with the orders of his wishes and abandon the lady.

That in summary is what happens in “Dhool Ka Phool” (1959). Here is the song in which Rajendra Kumar, after winning Mala Sinha over by a teasing song, is seen singing a duet with Mala Sinha in a cultural programme.

The song itself is a memorable song. It is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Lata. Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics are superb. N Datta is the music director.

This movie was a hit movie. And I am more than convinced that this movie was a hit mainly because of its songs and not because of the histrionics of Rajendra Kumar.

And this song, which is known even today, more than half a century later, played its part in the popularity of the movie as well as that of Rajendra Kumar.

Song-Tere pyaar ka aasraa chaahtaa hoon (Dhool Ka Phool) (1959) Singers-Mahendra Kapoor, Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-N Datta

Lyrics

tere pyaar kaa aasraa chaahtaa hoon
tere pyaar kaa aasraa chaahtaa hoon
wafaa kar rahaa hoon wafaa chaahtaa hoon
tere pyaar kaa aasraa chaahtaa hoon
wafaa kar rahaa hoon wafaa chaahtaa hoon
haseenon se ahad-e-wafaa chaahte ho
haseenon se ahad-e-wafaa chaahte ho
bade naasamajh ho ye kyaa chaahte ho
bade naasamajh ho

tere narm baalon mein taare sajaa ke
tere shokh kadmon mein kaliyaan bichhaa ke
mohabbat kaa chhotaa saa mandir banaa ke
mohabbat kaa chhotaa saa mandir banaa ke
tujhe raat din
tujhe raat din poojnaa chaahtaa hoon,
wafaa kar rahaa hoon wafaa chaahtaa hoon
tere pyaar kaa

zaraa soch lo dil lagaane se pahle
ki khonaa bhi padtaa hai paane ke pahle
ijaazat to le lo zamaane se pahle
ijaazat to le lo zamaane se pahle
ki tum husn ko
ki tum husn ko poojnaa chaahte ho,
bade naasamajh ho ye kyaa chaahte ho
bade naasamajh ho

kahaan tak jiyen teri ulfat ke maare
guzarti nahin zindagi bin sahaare
bahut ho chuke door rahkar ishaare
bahut ho chuke door rahkar ishaare
tujhe paas se
tujhe paas se dekhnaa chaahtaa hoon,
wafaa kar rahaa hoon wafaa chaahtaa hoon
tere pyaar kaa

muhabbat ki dushman hai saari Khudaai
mohabbat ki taqdeer mein hai judaayi
jo sunte nahin hain dilon ki duhaayi
jo sunte nahin hain dilon ki duhaayi
unhin se mujhe
unhin se mujhe maanganaa chaahate ho,
bade naasamajh ho ye kyaa chaahte ho
bade naasamajh ho

dupatte ke kone ko munh mein dabaa ke
zaraa dekh lo is taraf muskuraa ke
mujhi se mujhe chheen lo paas aake
mujhi se mujhe chheen lo paas aake
ki main maut se
ki main maut se khelnaa chaahtaa hoon,
wafaa kar rahaa hoon wafaa chaahtaa hoon
tere pyaar kaa

galat saare daawe galat saari kasmen
nibhengi yahaan kaise ulfat ki rasmen
yahaan zindagi hai riwaazon ke bas mein
riwaazon ko tum
riwaazon ko tum todnaa chaahte ho,
bade naasamajh ho ye kyaa chaahte ho
bade naasamajh ho

riwaazon ki parwaah naa rasmon kaa dar hai
teri aankh ke faisle pe nazar hai
riwaazon ki parwaah naa rasmon kaa dar hai
teri aankh ke faisle pe nazar hai
balaa se agar raastaa purkhatar hai
balaa se agar raastaa purkhatar hai
main is haath ko
main is haath ko thaamnaa chaahtaa hoon,
wafaa kar rahaa hoon wafaa chaahtaa hoon
tere pyaar kaa

This was one among the many week characters that Rajendra Kumar played. While I never liked him much, in his defense, he is only playing the role given to him and we should appreciate the fact that he was willing to take such a negative role. I always thought this song ironic in that he is the one pursuing the girl seeking wafa and then at the first sign of trouble ditches her with no qualms at all. Unfortunately, I have seen such characters in real life too. To paraphrase a kahavat – baat badi aur darshan chhote 😦

Indeed, all that big talk turn out to be hollow in this case.
