In Bollywood movies, “Mujra” songs is one of a standard category of songs. Most people, including me, discuss such songs as a matter of course, without thinking much about this matter. But the songs of “Adalat” (1958), which are all “Mujra” songs force me to think about it.

Most of the stories in Bollywood movies are derived from the Indian traditions. And in Indian tradition, though a married woman is called “ardhaanigini” (significant half- let us say), but on the other hand, she is required to treat her husband as a superior being, her god, and her place is supposed to be at his feet.

I have posted several songs from “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955) but I was not aware that this song was from that movie. Somehow this song to my mind did not belong to this movie.

There is rarely an excuse required in Hindi movies for a song. Birthday or wedding celebration parties (with the ubiquitous piano), the “tribal” dance scenes, club dances, hero-heroine scenes out in beautiful natural surroundings, the pining scenes and the mujra scenes – these are all well-established occasions waiting for a song to happen.
