Dilli tere qile par honge nishaan hamaare

Posted on: January 26, 2011

26th January (Republic day) and 15 august (Independence day) are the two national days in India when National flag is hoisted all over the country. This blog also joins in the celebration. After this blog began in july 2009, we have had two independence days and two republic days. During those occasions, this blog discussed the the popular patriotic songs from Hindi movies. Many of these songs have gone on to become iconic songs.

On the occasion of republic day viz 26th january, 2011, I greet all Indians, wherever they are. This is indeed a national festival of utmost importance. It was on this day in 1950 that Indians gave themselves the Indian constitution and decided that India was going to be a republic with equal rights and opportunities for all its citizens.

When I was a kid, india was just into its second decade as a republic. Now it is into its 62nd year. It is easy to forget, especially for the younger generation that India was not an independent nation till just 66 years ago. And those were the days when Indians dreamed of being independent once again.

There were some movies even those days which had patriotic songs. Many of them never saw the light of the day as they were banned by the them British Government that ruled India. But a few songs still managed to get past the censors and became popular with the public. I have discussed a few such songs in this blog already.

Here is another patriotic song from a Hindi movie that was made before independence. This movie is 1857 (1946). As the name suggests, this movie was about the 1857 war of independence that Indians had launched against their British rulers.

This movie “1857” (1946) has music by Sajjad Hussain. I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie already. This movie also has a partiotic song which is quite difficult to come by.

On the occasion of India’s republic day, here is this patriotic song from “1857” (1946). I am not aware who the singers are and who wrote this song. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify them.

PS-The singers are Khan Mastana and Amirbai Karnataki.I thank AK for identifying these voices.

Here is this rare song from “1857” (1946).

PS-“1857” (1946) had eight songs in it. All these eight songs have now been covered in the blog. The links of other songs from the movie are given below:

Chupke hi chupke na jaane
Gham e aashiyaanaa sataayegaa kab tak
Jhamak jhamak ye teg tamak
Meri ho gayi unse baat
Teri nazar mein main rahoon
Ummeedon kaa taaraa
Wo pehli mulaaqaat

The female voice very clearly seems to be Amirbai Karnataki. The male voice sounds like Khan Mastana, who also sang Watan ki raah mein watan ke naujawan shaheed ho from the film Shaheed (1948) alongwith Mohammad Rafi, which was composed by Ghulam Haider.

Yes, male voice indeed appears to be that of Khan Mastana and the female voice to be Amirbai Karnataki. Thanks for identifying these voices.

Atul ji,

A couple of corrections in lyrics.

The lines
hai ye zameen hamaari
hai ye hawaa hamaare

should read
hai ye zameen hamaari
hai ye zamaan hamaare

here the word zamaan means zamaana, time, period.
The translation would be
This is our land
This is our time

The second correction is in the line
Gandhi ka aur Arjun ka
hai khoon in ragon mein

Being a period movie for the year 1857, it seems unlikely that Gandhi’s name could have been used in this song. I have tried to decipher it, and the closest I can get is the word ‘gaandeev’ which is the name of Arjun’s bow. I would think this line should read
Gandeev ka aur Arjun ka
hai khoon in ragon mein

Yes very true observation. I too forgot the fact that Gandhi was not yet born in 1857. It has to be Gandeev. Thanks for the corrections in the lyrics.

Any idea who is the lyricist ?

I have not been able to identify the lyricist with certainty. I checked he HMV label and the Geet Kosh; they are silent about this info. It is possible this could be penned by Anjum Pilibhiti, but I am not certain.

The singers of this song are SURENDRA AND SURAIYA. Amirbai karnataki did not sing for this movie. The other female singers of this movie were Johrabai Ambalawali and Shamshad Begum.Similarly Khan Mastana had no song in this movie.
‘Dilli tere qile par’ was written by SHEVAN RIZVI.
Surendra and Suraiya were also the lead pair of this film.

Arunkumar ji,

I have not seen this movie and nor have I seen the original records of this movie. So I base my inputs on other sources of information that I believe to be authentic and well researched. I refer to the Hindi Film Geet Kosh vol 2, that carries the details of this movie and its songs. The following are clearly documented,

a. Surendra has not acted in this movie. The lead actor is Suresh.
As I checked online, I did find some web sites that list Surendra in the cast. Some others list Suresh. I would prefer to go by the listing in Geet Kosh which I accept as authentic and well researched.

b. This song is listed, however the HMV label information provided does not indicate the names of the singers or the lyricist. In the name of singer, ‘Chorus’ is listed.

Your are right in stating that Surendra and Suraiya have sang other songs in this movie. But I would beg to differ that they have sung this song. The male voice in this song is very different from that of Surendra (and does sound very similar to the voice of Khan Mastana in the song for the movie Shaheed). So also is the case with the female voice, that does not sound like that of Suraiya.

The information which I gave is also based on the various sites on internet. However,it is possible that my information is wrong and if so, I stand corrected.
The whole idea of sharing information with each others is to pass on what we believe is correct. There is no idea to prove anything.Basically,we all are interested-in fact,passionate-about our nostalgia in old hindi music.People like ATUL are kind enough to provide us what we eagerly await for.
Let us enjoy the music and thank ATUL.

It is interesting to see comments trying to identifying the singers. When identified them as resembling closest to Khan Mastana and Amirbai Karnataki, it was on the basis of my familiarity with the voice of these two singers, and not based on any source. After hearing them again, I would still reiterate my earlier views. I would also say, with more confidence, that they do not resemble Surendra and Suraiya as suggeted by some readers.

I have the video as well as the VCD OF 1857. Surrinder Nath B.A.LLB. has played the male lead. This song as been written by Shewan Rizvi. The voices are neither of Amirbai Karnataki nor of Khan Mastana..
The actual wording of tr song is
Hai yeh zameen hamari—Hain yeh makan hamare
The second correction is;-
Han Bhem Aur Arjun ka hai khoon in ragoon main
