In the golden era of Hindi movies, the storyline of most movies were of the tried and tested nature. Few movie makers would try to be different, because it meant takling risks and such risks rarely paid dividends at the box office. Still, every movie maker (and the actors working in these movies) claimed that his/her forthcoming movie was “different”.
The really “different” movies failed to find favour with audiences. The movie critics as well as censors were as immature and resistant to changes as the ordinary movie watchers. Most movie critics severely criticised these “different” movies.
B R Ishaara was one movie maker who actually made different movies. His movies were meant for mature audience, and anything that was not meant for all audience was looked down upon by all concerned. His movies would struggle to get passed by censors, and the censors would delete several scenes and give A certificate to the movie.Movie watchers (and critics) would take it to mean that these movies were “obscene” and were meant to cater to the basic instincts of the public.
As a result, most movies of B R Ishaara failed to do well at the box office, because very little was left of the movie after the movie came off the censors, and moreover, the movie watchers would not watch these movies like the usual movies. Also, these movies did not have big names, which was another big reason for movie watchers to keep away.
“Maan Jaayiye” (1972) was one such B R Ishaaraa movie which bombed at the box office. This movie had newcomers Rakesh Pandey and Rehana Sultan in lead roles.
Since the movie failed at the box office, the music of the movie too failed to take off. The music of this movie too was like the movie itself. One needed to be “mature” to appreciate its music.
Now, some four decades later, when one looks at the movie and listens to the songs, one can only wonder at the naivete and immaturity of the movioe goers those days. The movie as well as the songs deserved much better fate.
Here is a song from this movie. This song did not become popular, but it is a nice song to listen to. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Rehana Sultana and Rakesh Pandey. Naqsh Llyalpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jaidev.

Lyrics (Provided by Prakashchandra)
O mitwaa
mitwaaa
badraa chhaaye re kaare kaare kajraare
aa mitwa
o mitwa
ang laga jaare ,
o mitwaa
aayee milan ki rut matwaari
aayee milan ki rut matwaari
jhoom uthi hai bagiya saari
phulwa mehke daari daari
bheegi bheegi chale purwaare
aaa mitwaa
ang lag jaa re,
mitwaa
mitwaa
ang lag ja,
o mitwa
ye saawan,
man bhaawan
sang laaya hai prem badariya
rang daaro
rang daaro,
sapnon ko
chupke se milaake najariya
baat yahi
bas baat yahi
sharmilee kali ke
kaanon mein bhi kahe bhanwraa re
aa mitwa,
ang lag jaare mitwaa,
mitwa ,
ang lag jaa,
o mitwa
door koyaliya gaaye ban mein
door koyaliya gaaye ban mein
aayaa ye sandes pawan mein
oonche parbat ke aangan mein
ab to hone lagi barkha re
aa mitwaa
ang lag jaa re
badraa chhaaye re
kaare kaare kajraare
o mitwaa
ang lag jaa re
